Starfield - Best Outpost Locations

This guide shows the best locations to set up Outposts in Starfield. Here, you'll learn the best planets for Outposts, the resources you can get from them, and how to find the best location on a planet to build your Outpost.

What Are The Best Outpost Locations?

Planets With Helium, Aluminum, and Iron for Beginners

An Outpost's primary function is to passively generate resources while the player is out exploring the Starfield. To do this, you will need to have extractors and a variety of other outpost modules to make this process efficient.

By selecting planets like Andraphon for your first Outpost, you gain access to Helium, Aluminum, and Iron.

These are 3 of the most common resources needed to craft various outpost modules, which makes the entire outpost building endeavour much more efficient.

Areas With Multiple Resource Veins for Farms

Because the number of Outposts you can build is limited, the best outpost locations are the ones with access to multiple resource veins. Selecting areas where different resource veins are clumped together allows you to farm these resources while keeping the total number of outposts low.

This, in turn, allows you to farm a multitude of different resources simultaneously. Given, you put the time in when searching for the best outpost locations.

Aesthetic Planets for Homes

Some players might be looking for a planet to build a home instead of a resource generator. So the best outpost locations for a home-style base would be planets that are lush and filled with Fauna to elevate the ambience.

Best Planets for Resource Outposts

Best Outpost Locations
Outpost Location Explanation
Andraphon Abundant in basic resources needed for outpost crafting and expansion.
Zamka Abundant in other important resources needed for outpost crafting and expansion.
Tau Cetii VIII-b Offers both Iron and Aluminum while having a moderate amount of both Flora and Fauna.
Titan Great late game outpost farm for Tungsten and Titanium.
Luna Location of NASA Snow Globe while offering both Helium and Iron.
Skink Zero Wire farming outpost location.
Maheo II Multiple rare resources in one location.

Andraphon

Starfield - Andraphon Location

Pros Cons
+ Aluminum and Beryllium Farm - No Atmosphere (Solar Radiation)

Andraphon is one of the best places for your first outpost thanks to containing important resources like Aluminum, Iron, Beryllium, and Helium-3. You can find this moon orbiting Sumati in the Narion System.

Tau Ceti VIII-b

Starfield - Tau Ceti VIII-b Location

Pros Cons
+ Aluminum Farm
+ Moderate Fauna and Flora
- Far from other systems (May require Cargo Links and Helium-3)

Another great planet with important resources is Tau Ceti VIII-b, which also has Aluminum and Iron in addition to Argon and Water. This moon can be found orbiting Tau Ceti VIII in the Tau Ceti system.

Titan

Starfield - Titan Location

Pros Cons
+ Tungsten and Titanium Farm - Deep Freeze Temperature (Need Rank 1 Planetary Habitation)

Titan, one of the moons of Saturn, contains valuable resources, including Tungsten and Titanium. However, the extreme temperatures of Deep Freeze make it impossible to set up an Outpost unless you have the Planetary Habitation skill, which makes this a good outpost for the lategame.

Luna

Starfield - Luna Location

Pros Cons
+ Apollo 11 Moon Landing Location - Lack of Material Variety
- No Atmosphere (Solar Radiation)

Not all outposts need to be built for the best resource efficiency, although having both Iron and Helium-3 is appreciated. Make your very own moon base close to Earth in the Sol system for a sense of familiarity.

Upon visiting the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, you can pick up the unique NASA Snow Globe and gain 100 XP for doing so.

How to Find The Best Outpost Locations

Find a Spot With Converging Resources

From the map of the planet, select Show Resources and pick a spot where as many of the resources you want as possible are converging on one spot. We were able to create an Outpost with four of Andraphon's five resources in the spot shown above.

There should be one or two common resources which are found almost everywhere in the area, and one or two rare resources which are only found in small spots. The rare resources will be marked with Stars on the Map indicating their rarity. Identify which resources are rare in advance so you know what you will be hunting for.

How to Use the Hand Scanner

Use the Beacon to Scout for an Intersection

After landing, follow the steps below to find a good spot with two common resources and two rare resources.

  1. Take out your Scanner and select Outpost to take out an Outpost Beacon. In the top left, you'll see an Available Resources popup displaying the resources you can extract from the spot the Beacon is held over.
  2. Run and fly around with the Beacon out and watch how the Available Resources popup changes until you find a spot with two common resources and one rare resource.
  3. Switch back to the Scanner and locate the exact area with the rare resource. If you have trouble finding it, place the Outpost Beacon, then Toggle View to get a bird's-eye view of the area. Once you find it, go up to the Outpost Beacon and Remove it.
  4. Starting from the area with the rare resource, take out the Outpost Beacon again and move it around to see if the other rare resource is anywhere within range. If it can't be found, go back to step 2.
  5. Once you find the other rare resource, continue moving the Beacon around nearby until you find a spot which intersects with all four resources.

One thing to note is that you need to find an area where the resources are as an ore vein within the ground to extract them via an Outpost. Just having a few rocks scattered about of the element you want will do nothing for your Outpost, so if you want a particular element, be sure to locate it within the ground.
