How to Unlock Surveying
Spend a Skill Point to Unlock Skill
As Surveying is a Novice skill, it can be learned without having to spend skill points on other skills in the Science skill tree. You just need to spend a skill point on Surveying to learn it.

The Surveying skill is automatically learned by the following backgrounds:

How to Rank Up Surveying Skill
All Rank Challenges and Effects
| Rank | Challenge | Effects |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | - | Adds an optional zoom to the hand scanner, and scan distance is increased to 20 meters. |
| 2 | Use the hand scanner to scan 10 unique resources, flora, or fauna | Adds another level of zoom to the hand scanner, and scan distance is increased to 30 meters. |
| 3 | Use the hand scanner to scan 25 unique resources, flora, or fauna | Adds another level of zoom to the hand scanner, and scan distance is increased to 40 meters. |
| 4 | Use the hand scanner to scan 50 unique resources, flora, or fauna | Adds another level of zoom to the hand scanner, and scan distance is increased to 50 meters. |
Scan Different Resources, Fauna, and Flora on Different Planets
To complete the Surveying Rank Up Challenge, use the Hand Scanner to scan different Resources, Fauna, and Flora that you have never scanned before. It's unnecessary to scan them to 100%, so skills such as Botany and Zoology would not help.
Scanning planets inhabited by fauna and flora would progress the challenge faster as there would be more things to scan other than resources or minerals on the surface.
