Spend 8 Skill Points in the Tech Tree
As Starship Design is a higher-tier Expert skill, it is unlocked by spending a total of 8 skill points in the Tech skill tree before it can be learned.

How to Rank Up Starship Design Skill
All Rank Challenges and Effects

| 1 | Spend a total of 8 Skill Points in the Tech tree. | Allows the installation of improved ship modules. |
| 2 | Install 5 unique ship modules. | Allows the installation of superior ship modules. |
| 3 | Install 15 unique ship modules. | Allows the installation of cutting-edge ship modules |
| 4 | Install 30 unique ship modules. | Allows the installation of experimental ship modules. |
Install Unique Ship Modules to Progress the Skill Challenge
Installing and purchasing new Ship Modules you have not previously installed during ship customization would progress the challenge for the skill.
As ship modules are sold back to the vendor at 12.5% of their original price, installing ship parts just to sell them back is not advisable, as you would lose a lot of credits for doing so.
You can customize your ship at Space Ports in all major cities.
