Starfield - Companion Weapons - Do Companions Need Ammo

Companions only need one piece of ammo to use their weapon in Starfield. Read on to learn whether or not companions need ammo, how to change their weapons, and more!

Do Companions Need Ammo?

Companions Only Need One Piece of Ammo

Starfield - Companion

Companions do not consume ammo, unlike your player character. This allows you to give them one piece of ammo that corresponds to the weapon in their inventory to make use of their equipped weapon. If you remove the ammo from their inventory, they will resort to using their fists during combat.

You can also give one grenade to your companion and they will use an infinite amount of it!

How to Change Companion's Weapons

Choose Let's Trade Gear

Starfield - Choose Let

To have your companion equip a specific weapon, talk to them and choose "Let's trade gear". This opens up a list of items that they have in their inventory.

Use Inventory Menu to Give Companions Better Weapons

How to Equip Companions With Weapons

Starfield - Inventory Button Highlighted
Once your Companion's inventory pops up, click the inventory button to open yours instead.

Starfield - Select a Weapon to Trade
Select the weapon you want to give to your companion by clicking it. Alternatively, you can also press the corresponding trade button.

Starfield - Select an Ammo to Trade
If your companion does not have the ammo needed to use the weapon you provided, also give them one piece of the corresponding ammo type.

Starfield - Go Back to Companion
After all of that, go back to your companion's inventory by pressing the corresponding button.

Starfield - Equip a Weapon For Your Companion
Finally, hover to the weapon that you want your companion to equip. Then, press the equip button.

Knowing how to equip weapons for your companion is important because giving them better weapons will allow them to be more effective in combat!
