A Rathian so mighty, it was crowned an Apex. It is eternally possessed by wrath and terror, possibly due to the myriad wounds that cover its body. Its tail oozes a venom far deadlier than any of a normal monster. The call of an Apex unleashes its tortured anger on nearby beasts, driving them into a frenzy. |
Apex Rathian can only be encountered as an additional target monster in Anomaly Investigations starting as low as Level 21. Defeating it rewards a base of 220 Anomaly Research Points. Unlike most monsters in Master Rank, Apex Rathian doesn't gain any new moves.

An angry Apex Rathian will trigger a devastating move, spraying poisonous thorns in all directions, creating toxic fields wherever they land. Push on against an enraged Apex to quickly rid of its rage and steady its temper.

A cure for poison/venom.
Crafted or bought from the Merchant. Antidote Herb |
|
Removes all traces of poison and restores a slight amount of health.
Crafted using Materials. Antidote + Blue Mushroom |
Venom is an improved, more powerful version of Poison that drains your health faster. Whenever you fight Apex Rathian, always have Antidotes and Herbal Medicines in your Item Pouch.
Conversely, you may reduce Venom effects by using a combination of armor that has Poison Resistance and reaching Lv. 3.
Poison Resistance Skill Effects and Which Armors Have it
When Apex Rathian is enraged, it will execute Somersault attacks that deal Venom three (3) times in a row. Always be telegraph move because these can instantly cart unaware hunters. When not enraged, Apex Rathian will only execute one somersault before landing.
Not Enraged | Enraged |
---|---|
To know if Apex Rathian is enraged, check the tail. When it is oozing with poison, Apex Rathian is enraged and ready to pounce!
Even when the tail is cut, the poison will ooze out of the cut tail. Also, the poison that oozes here won't give you Venom - it's just an indicator if Apex Rathian is enraged or not.
Apex Rathian's tail attacks scatter Venom Spikes around the battlefield. These obnoxious spikes emanate gasses that can give hunters Venom. It will despawn after a short period but whenever it's up, stay away from them at all cost!
Cutting down Apex Rathian's tail removes its ability to scatter Venom Spikes around the battlefield. Always aim to sever the tail as much as possible.
Attacking the head while Apex Rathian is angry can have a high chance of triggering a down. Staying on Apex Rathian's head is extremely risky of course, but pulling this off can considerably increase your window of opportunity for attacks.
Attack Name | Description |
---|---|
Serial Somersault Attacks [DANGER] |
A series of spin attacks that allows Apex Rathian to deal Venom with its tail. Has very wide range. |
Fiery Breath Explosions | Multiple fiery explosions that can deal Fireblight. Causes multiple explosions in a very wide area. |
Venom Spike Scatter [DANGER] |
Special spikes that are plunged into the ground whenever Apex Rathian attacks with its tail. |
Crashing Talons | A devastating aerial attack that can easily knock hunters out. |
Diagonal Tail Flip [DANGER] |
Apex Rathian sommersaults before taking flight, flinging its tail upward at a diagonal angle. |
Triple Tail Swipe [DANGER] |
Apex Rathian performs a tail combo that covers both its front and back. |
Quick Bite + Tail Spin Combo | A straightforward attack combo that involves Apex Rathian's head and tail. |
All of Apex Rathian's moves in the Rampage are also present when hunting it in the Hub Quest! |
---|
A fairly impossible series of moves to deal with as it can hit for up to three (3) times in a row, we suggest avoiding this move at all cost! After seeing that Apex Rathian executed the first diagonal somersault with a wide range, you should move away as much as possible. This mostly happens when Apex Rathian is enraged.
When not enraged, Apex Rathian will only execute a normal Somersault so attack after it lands!
Serial Somersault Attack Variations |
---|
Diagonal Somersault 1: A wide diagonal somersault that deals Venom. |
Diagonal Somersault 2: Another diagonal somersault with the opposite angle as the first one; deals Venom. |
Intimidating Roar: A small, silent roar to frighten hunters. |
Straight Somersault: A straight, vertical somersault with a long range that deals Venom. Apex Rathian will land when finished. |
Fiery Breath Explosions Attack Information |
---|
Fiery Breath Explosions: This move is an improved version of the normal Rathian's inhaling fire explosion attack. It covers a very wide range so always look out when Rathian inhales and lowers its head. It is suggested to stick near the side of the head but when you are directly in front, we suggest performing an Emergency Evade! |
Venom Spike Scatter Attack Information |
---|
Venom Spike Scatter: Venom Spikes are plunged into the ground whenever Apex Rathian attacks with its tail. These spikes emanate a deadly aura that applies Venom to anyone that ventures too close. Venom is a more potent version of the Poison status so always have Antidote or Herbal Medicine at all times. |
Crashing Talons Attack Information |
---|
Crashing Talons: Apex Rathian picks its target from the sky. Once a target is chosen, Apex Rathian lifts both legs forward in an attempt to spike the target on the way down. This attack deals incredibly high damage if it connects so be prepared to block or dodge out of the way whenever Apex Rathian's up in the air. |
Diagonal Tail Flip Attack Information |
---|
Diagonal Tail Flip: Somewhat similar to a regular Pink Rathian's Somersault, Apex Rathian flips its tail upward at a diagonal angle dealing heavy damage and applying Venom to anyone it connects to. Take note that Apex Rathian can repeat this attack multiple times while airborne. |
Triple Tail Swipe Attack Information |
---|
Triple Tail Swipe: Apex Rathian performs a regular tail swing behind it before spinning around to finish the combo towards the front. This attack can inflict Venom but it relatively easy to dodge by positioning beside its legs. |
Quick Bite + Tail Spin Combo Attack Information |
---|
Quick Bite + Tail Spin Combo: Apex Rathian performs a quick bite towards the target. This is followed by a very quick tailspin that inflicts Venom on anyone it hits. Always be mindful of this attack! |
Apex Rathian Rampage Key Notes |
---|
As with all Apex Monsters, Apex Rathian rushes to the final area as soon as it arrives. Use a Farcaster to quickly return to the campsite and use the shortcut to the final area. Once there, quickly set up all of your installations. This gives you a solid start leading into the actual fight.
In multiplayer, consider having at least two people positioned by the Dragonators or Splitting Wyvernshot of the first area to significantly damage Apex Rathian as it breaks the first gate.

|
Removes all traces of poison and restores a slight amount of health.
Crafted using Materials. Antidote + Blue Mushroom |
As previously mentioned, Venom is a more potent version of the Poison status. This particular status drains HP significantly faster than the regular version and can easily knock you out if left unchecked!
Always make sure you bring a full stack of Antidote or Herbal Medicine before you engage Apex Rathian. You can even bring a full stack of both if necessary!
Installations and traps can only do so much against Apex Monsters. At the end of the day, you still have to get up close and personal to get the job done!
With this in mind, the Counter Signal significantly boosts your weapon damage for the entire duration. The signal pops up at random points during the fight but you can activate it manually for a fraction of its duration by using the Counter Gong.
Aside from its long reach, Apex Rathian's tail is the main source of its Venom. Severing the tail makes the fight a lot easier.
The actual fight against Apex Rathian is the perfect time to use specific Warriors of Kamura in your arsenal. It is important to note that this does not mean that you should use all of them at once though!
Each of these special installations have their own benefits and mechanics when activated. Refer to the list below to determine when is the best time to use each one:
When to Deploy the Warriors of Kamura | |
---|---|
Elder Fugen | Elder Fugen unleashes a very strong AoE attack in its deployed area. Use this to deal massive damage against Apex Rathian whenever it charges up for a big attack on the gate. |
Master Utsushi | Master Utsushi performs a large AoE attack in its deployed area that makes regular monster caught in the attack rideable. He is best deployed whenever Apex Rathian summons a horde of monsters! |
Yomogi the Chef | Yomogi bombards monsters with her Machine Cannon and increases the damage of all hunters in the area, similar to the Counter Signal. It is recommended that you deploy her whenever Apex Rathian charges up for a big attack on the gate as well. |

I have 100% figured out the prerequisite for unlocking the regular hunt version of apex monsters. Simply put, when selecting a Rampage quest if the star difficulty next to the mission (i.e 7★) is colored red you cannot unlock what ever apex is in that mission, if the star difficulty is colored white and you succesfully defeat the apex its respective normal hunt will be unlocked.
