Apex Rathian Attack Patterns

Aside from using the entire attack set of a regular Rathian, Apex Rathian earned its title by boasting new and deadly moves! Read more about them below:

Attack Name Description
Somersault Attacks
[DANGER]
A series of spin attacks that allows Apex Rathian to deal Venom with its tail. Has very wide range.
Firey Breath Explosions Multiple fiery explosions that can deal Fireblight. Causes multiple explosions in a very wide area.
Venom Spikes
[DANGER]
Special spikes that are plunged into the ground whenever Apex Rathian attacks with its tail.
Crashing Talons A devastating aerial attack that can easily knock hunters out.
Diagonal Tail Flip
[DANGER]
Apex Rathian sommersaults before taking flight, flinging its tail upward at a diagonal angle.
Triple Tail Swipe
[DANGER]
Apex Rathian performs a tail combo that covers both its front and back.
Quick Bite + Tail Spin Combo A straightforward attack combo that involves Apex Rathian's head and tail.
All of Apex Rathian's moves in the Rampage is also present when hunting it in the Hub Quest!

Somersault Attacks

Apex Rathian Somersault.gif

# Series of Movements
1 Diagonal Somersault
A wide diagonal somersault that deals Venom.
2 Diagonal Somersault
Another diagonal somersault with the opposite angle as the first one; deals Venom.
3 Intimidating Roar
A small, silent roar to frighten hunters.
4 Straight Somersault
A straight, vertical somersault with a long range that deals Venom. Apex Rathian will land when finished.

A fairly impossible series of moves to deal with as it can hit for up to three (3) times in a row, we suggest avoiding this move at all cost! After seeing that Apex Rathian executed the first diagonal somersault with a wide range, you should move away as much as possible. This mostly happens when Apex Rathian is enraged.

When not enraged, Apex Rathian will only execute a normal Somersault so attack after it lands!

Fiery Breath Explosions

Apex Rathian Fiery Breath Explosion.gif

This move is an improved version of the normal Rathian's inhaling fire explosion attack. It covers a very wide range so always look out when Rathian inhales and lowers its head.

It is suggested to stick near the side of the head but when you are directly in front, we suggest performing an Emergency Evade!

Venom Spike Scatter

Monster Hunter Rise (Apex Rathian) - Venom Spikes.png
Venom Spikes are plunged into the ground whenever Apex Rathian attacks with its tail. These spikes emanate a deadly aura that applies Venom to anyone that ventures too close.

Venom is a more potent version of the Poison status so always have Antidote or Herbal Medicine at all times.

Crashing Talons

Monster Hunter Rise (Apex Rathian) - Crashing Talons.gif
Apex Rathian picks its target from the sky. Once a target is chosen, Apex Rathian lifts both legs forward in an attempt to spike the target on the way down. This attack deals incredibly high damage if it connects so be prepared to block or dodge out of the way whenever Apex Rathian's up in the air.

Diagonal Tail Flip

Monster Hunter Rise (Apex Rathian) - Diagonal Tail Flip.gif
Somewhat similar to a regular Pink Rathian's Somersault, Apex Rathian flips its tail upward at a diagonal angle dealing heavy damage and applying Venom to anyone it connects to. Take note that Apex Rathian can repeat this attack multiple times while airborne.

Triple Tail Swipe

Monster Hunter Rise (Apex Rathian) - Triple Tail Swipe.gif
Apex Rathian performs a regular tail swing behind it before spinning around to finish the combo towards the front. This attack can inflict Venom but it relatively easy to dodge by positioning beside its legs.

Quick Bite + Tail Spin Combo

Monster Hunter Rise (Apex Rathian) - Quick Bite and Tail Spin Combo.gif
Apex Rathian performs a quick bite towards the target. This is followed by a very quick tailspin that inflicts Venom on anyone it hits. Always be mindful of this attack!

Prepare Countermeasures Against Venom

Item Effects / How to Get
A cure for poison/venom.
Crafted or bought from the Merchant.
Antidote Herb
Removes all traces of poison and restores a slight amount of health.
Crafted using Materials.
Antidote + Blue Mushroom

Venom is an improved, more powerful version of Poison that drains your health faster. Whenever you fight Apex Rathian, always have Antidotes and Herbal Medicines in your Item Pouch.

Conversely, you may reduce Venom effects by using a combination of armor that has Poison Resistance and reaching Lv. 3.

Poison Resistance Skill Effects and Which Armors Have it

Beware of Apex Rathian's Somersault Attacks

Apex Rathian Avoid Somersaults.jpg

When Apex Rathian is enraged, it will execute Somersault attacks that deal Venom three (3) times in a row. Always be telegraph move because these can instantly cart unaware hunters. When not enraged, Apex Rathian will only execute one somersault before landing.

Poison Drips on the Tail When Enraged

Not Enraged Enraged
Apex Rathian Tail Not Enraged.pngEnlarge Apex Rathian Tail Enraged.pngEnlarge

To know if Apex Rathian is enraged, check the tail. When it is oozing with poison, Apex Rathian is enraged and ready to pounce!

Even when the tail is cut, the poison will ooze out of the cut tail. Also, the poison that oozes here won't give you Venom - it's just an indicator if Apex Rathian is enraged or not.

Watch Out for Venom Spikes

Apex Rathian Venom Spikes.jpg

Apex Rathian's tail attacks scatter Venom Spikes around the battlefield. These obnoxious spikes emanate gasses that can give hunters Venom. It will despawn after a short period but whenever it's up, stay away from them at all cost!

Cut the Tail!

Apex Rathian Cut the Tail.jpg

Cutting down Apex Rathian's tail removes its ability to scatter Venom Spikes around the battlefield. Always aim to sever the tail as much as possible.

Aim for The Head When Angry!

Apex Rathian Attack When Enraged.jpg

Attacking the head while Apex Rathian is angry can have a high chance of triggering a down. Staying on Apex Rathian's head is extremely risky of course, but pulling this off can considerably increase your window of opportunity for attacks.

Knock Targeters Out of the Sky

Monster Hunter Rise (Rampage) - Retreat Shot against Targeters.gif
Flying Targeters such as Pukei-Pukei can be a major nuisance during the rampage if left unchecked. Shooting them with the Ballista's Retreat Shot will send them crashing down to the ground and incapacitate them for a few precious seconds.

Alternatively, you can also use a Flash Bomb if you are not manning an installation.

Control Gate Crashers

Monster Hunter Rise (Rampage) - Controlling Gate Crashers.gif
Gate Crashers must always be eliminated as soon as possible to ensure that your barricades and gates remain healthy! Fortunately, all of the manned installations have efficient ways to restrain and control them.

How to Control Gate Crashers via Installations
Ballista Use Crag Shot on a Gate Crasher's head twice to knock it down.
You can also use Retreat Shot on most Gate Crashers to interrupt their attack.
Cannon Charge your Thunder Shot to at least level two for a good chance to apply Thunderblight.
Once Thunderblight is applied, bombard the Gate Crasher's head with regular shots to knock it down.
Machine Cannon Use Silkbind Shot at a Gate Crasher to drag and restrain it in front of you for a few seconds.
You can pelt it with Cluster Shots as soon as it is within close range.

Take Advantage of the Guard Mechanic

Monster Hunter Rise (Rampage) - Guard Mechanic.gif
Be mindful of the Guard mechanic whenever you are manning an installation! Guard not only reduces the damage taken by you and the installation itself, but it also prevents you from getting knocked off.

You also do not have to worry about timing your guard because the stance is maintained as long as you hold the R button.

Use the Dragonator or Splitting Wyvernshot in Dire Situations

Dragonator Splitting Wyvernshot
Monster Hunter Rise (Rampage) - Using Dragonators.gifEnlarge Monster Hunter Rise (Rampage) - Splitting Wyvernshot.gifEnlarge

Ever found yourself in a situation in which three Anjanaths are about to knock at your gate? Consider using the Dragonator or Splitting Wyvernshot whenever you're caught in a very tough scenario!

Use the Power Kiln to Refresh Installations

Monster Hunter Rise (Rampage) - Power Kiln.gif
Make the most out of the rest period in between Rampage Waves by using the Power Kiln. The Power Kiln repairs installations and reduces the cooldown of the Dragonator and Splitting Wyvernshot for every third heave of coal into it.

This ensures that all of your installations are primed and ready for the next wave!

Wyvern Ride Whenever Possible

Monster Hunter Rise (Rampage) - Wyvern Riding.gif
Aside from getting eliminated, bombarding monsters with manned installations can make them vulnerable to Wyvern Riding. This lets you eliminate multiple monsters with relative ease so always keep an eye out for the opportunity!

Position Wyvernfire Artillery Beside Gates

Monster Hunter Rise (Rampage) - Wyvernfire Artillery Positioning.gif
Wyvernfire Artillery may seem like a clunky installation at first glance but the key here is to determine the best position for it. We find that these installations perform best when positioned just beside the gate because this ensures constant damage to any monster that approaches it!

It can also be instrumental against all major rampage targets such as the Apex Monsters and Ibushi from this position due to their tendency to charge their large attacks near the gate itself.

Position Dragonbait In Front of Dragonators

Monster Hunter Rise (Rampage) - Baiting Stalkers.gif
Dragonbait attracts Stalkers with its loud horn, making it the perfect installation to place in front of Dragonators. Keep in mind that you only have a limited number of Dragonbait per Rampage Quest so make the most out of them!

Bring Your Own Traps and Bombs

Monster Hunter Rise (Rampage) - Setting Traps and Bombs.gif
If you're looking to fortify your position further, consider using your own Shock and Pitfall Traps at key positions and choke points. Large and Mega Barrel Bombs can also be stacked on top of Bamboo Bombs to further increase their potency!

You Can Restock at the Campsite

Monster Hunter Rise - Restocking Items.png
You can replenish your stock in between Rampage Waves by entering the indicated room within the campsite.

How to Beat Apex Rathian on Rampages

Apex Rathian Rampage Key Notes

Check Icon.pngAlways bring Antidote or Herbal Medicine
Check Icon.pngSever the Tail
Check Icon.pngUse the Warriors of Kamura

Rush to the Final Area

Monster Hunter Rise (Apex Rathian) - Rush to the Final Area.gif
As with all Apex Monsters, Apex Rathian rushes to the final area as soon as it arrives. Use a Farcaster to quickly return to the campsite and use the shortcut to the final area. Once there, quickly set up all of your installations. This gives you a solid start leading into the actual fight.

In multiplayer, consider having at least two people positioned by the Dragonators or Splitting Wyvernshot of the first area to significantly damage Apex Rathian as it breaks the first gate.

Always Bring Antidote or Herbal Medicine

Item Effects / How to Get
A cure for poison/venom.
Crafted or bought from the Merchant.
Antidote Herb
Removes all traces of poison and restores a slight amount of health.
Crafted using Materials.
Antidote + Blue Mushroom

As previously mentioned, Venom is a more potent version of the Poison status. This particular status drains HP significantly faster than the regular version and can easily knock you out if left unchecked!

Always make sure you bring a full stack of Antidote or Herbal Medicine before you engage Apex Rathian. You can even bring a full stack of both if necessary!

Take Advantage of the Counter Signal

Monster Hunter Rise (Apex Rathian) - Counter Signal.gif
Installations and traps can only do so much against Apex Monsters. At the end of the day, you still have to get up close and personal to get the job done!

With this in mind, the Counter Signal significantly boosts your weapon damage for the entire duration. The signal pops up at random points during the fight but you can activate it manually for a fraction of its duration by using the Counter Gong.

Sever the Tail

Monster Hunter Rise (Apex Rathian) - Sever the Tail.gif
Aside from its long reach, Apex Rathian's tail is the main source of its Venom. Severing the tail makes the fight a lot easier.

Use the Warriors of Kamura

Monster Hunter Rise (Apex Rathian) - Deploying Yomogi.gif
The actual fight against Apex Rathian is the perfect time to use specific Warriors of Kamura in your arsenal. It is important to note that this does not mean that you should use all of them at once though!

Each of these special installations have their own benefits and mechanics when activated. Refer to the list below to determine when is the best time to use each one:

When to Deploy the Warriors of Kamura
Elder Fugen Elder Fugen unleashes a very strong AoE attack in its deployed area. Use this to deal massive damage against Apex Rathian whenever it charges up for a big attack on the gate.
Master Utsushi Master Utsushi performs a large AoE attack in its deployed area that makes regular monster caught in the attack rideable. He is best deployed whenever Apex Rathian summons a horde of monsters!
Yomogi the Chef Yomogi bombards monsters with her Machine Cannon and increases the damage of all hunters in the area, similar to the Counter Signal. It is recommended that you deploy her whenever Apex Rathian charges up for a big attack on the gate as well.

Seems perfectly realistic to me actually, every human that the monster sees is an enemy and it's because we all are (the game's called monster hunter after all)... this isn't harvest moon.
