Focus on the Guardian Rathalos's wings and tail to break or sever them respectively for more rewards. Breaking the former reduces its flight capability, while severing the latter decreases its tail-attacks' potency.

You can do this by using a big weapon like a Long Sword or Great Sword, or by knocking it down and using other Slashing weapons.

Moveset and Openings

Move Explanation
Fireball Spit
While on the ground, the Guardian Rathalos spits a fireball directly at you. The flame will linger on the ground for a while. Avoid taking damage by dodging this attack sideways.
Flying Fireball Spit
The Guardian Rathalos spits a fireball twice as it hovers above ground. Avoid taking damage by running and dodging to the side.
Flaming Bite
The Guardian Rathalos's mouth charges towards you with a flaming mouth and perfoms a biting sweep. Dodge backwards or block this attack.
Fire Sweep
The Guardian Rathalos flies towards you and breathes fire as it spins around. Distance yourself with a dive-evade.
Tail Sweep
While on the ground, the Guardian Rathalos will do a 180-degree turn as it sweeps its tail on the ground. It will follow up with another 180-degree tail swipe. Dodge these attacks by distancing or dodging backwards.
Flying Tail Sweep
While flying, the Guardian Rathalos will use its tail to do a front sweeping attack. Simply dodge backwards to avoid damage.
Stomp and Fireball
The Guardian Rathalos will jump with glowing white talons and stomp to your location, creating a small explosion. It will then turn and spit a fireball as a follow-up attack. Avoid taking damage by dodging backwards as the stomp arrives and then dodging the fireball sideways.
Talon Drop
While hovering in the air, the Guardian Rathalos will descend fast with glowing talons and create a small explosion. Dodge this attack in any direction as soon as it prepares to drop.
Dragon Stomp
The Guardian Rathalos will soar and elevate before stomping down the ground with more force, creating an explosion at its talons. Use a dive-evade to ensure safety against damage.
Dragon Thrashing
While hovering in the air, the Guardian Rathalos will perform exploding talon strikes before stomping down on to the ground, creating an explosion. Distance yourself from this attack to avoid damage.

A Tempered Guardian Rathalos is distinguishable by its slightly different color palette, and the large white scars that run across its body. These are proof of having survived lots of battles, marking its strength.

You can break these scars open to reveal a blue Tempered Wound that grants you extra rewards when it is broken!

Destroying a Tempered Guardian Rathalos' tempered wound can also reward you with either a Wyverian Bloodstone (S), Wyverian Bloodstone, or Wyverian Bloodstone (L). These are used for Relic Melding.
