Monster Hunter Wilds - Bowgun Special Ammo Guide

The Heavy and Light Bowguns have powerful Special Ammo that you can use in Monster Hunter Wilds. Learn more about the Light Bowgun's Wyvernblast, the Heavy Bowgun's Wyvernheart and Wyvernsnipe Ignition, and the new Wyverncounter Ignition.

What is Special Ammo?

Powerful Attacks Exclusive to Bowgun

Special Ammo are a type of ammo separate from normal Bowgun ammo with powerful effects. These effects range from making your attacks deal additional damage to shooting one powerful projectile or even shooting a stream of bullets.

Has a Cooldown When Used

Unlike normal Ammo that can be reloaded when used up, Special Ammo instead has a cooldown before it can be used again. Additionally, the Heavy Bowgun's Igniition mechanic, which is needed for its Special Ammo, charges up both over time and whenever you land a shot on the monster.

Uses the New Ignition Mechanic on Heavy Bowguns

The Heavy Bowgun's Special Ammo is tied to the new Ignition mechanic. Entering Ignition allows you to use the Heavy Bowgun's Special Ammo, while also allowing you to charge your Focus Blast: Wyvern Howl for more powerful attacks.

Once the Ignition bar is empty, you must charge it up before being able to use any Special Ammo again.

Wyvernblast (Light Bowgun)

Wyvernblast is the Light Bowgun's Special Ammo, which involves you shooting it into the ground where you are standing, signified by a burning flare no the ground.

Whenever an attack hits the Wyvernblast, be it from you, other hunters, or the monster themselves, the Wyvernblast will explode, dealing explosive damage. This can be repeated as long as the Wyvernblast still burns.

This is best partnered up with the Light Bowgun's Rapid Fire mechanic, as you can activate the Wyvernblast explosions multiple times in a row with it.

Adhesive Ammo (Light Bowgun)

Adhesive Ammo shoots a bomb to the monster. This bomb can then be attacked, which will increase the damage it deals once it explodes.

Wyvernheart Ignition (Heavy Bowgun)

Wyvernheart Ignition is one of the Heavy Bowgun's Special Ammo, and involves you shooting a stream of bullets with ramping damage up to a cap as long as you hit monsters. Interrupting your fire resets the damage ramp up.

To use this Special Ammo, you must first enter Ignition Mode before firing at the enemy. You are free to walk around while shooting, but your Auto-Guard will not activate while you are firing.

Unlike in previous games, you can freely switch between Wyvernheart Ignition and Wyvernpierce Ignition whenever you customize your bowgun.

Wyvernpierce Ignition (Heavy Bowgun)

Wyvernpierce Ignition is another Special Ammo for the Heavy Bowgun, and has you standing in place before shooting a piercing projectile that slowly travels forward, dealing damage to anything it hits as it travels. The more the bullet pierces the monster, the more damage they will receive.

Using this Special Ammo requires proper placement and set-up, as you must shoot where the monster is longest, usually from the head to the tail.

As mentioned above, you can now freely switch between Wyvernheart Ignition and Wyvernpierce Ignition whenever you customize your bowgun.

Wyverncounter Ignition (Heavy Bowgun)

Wyverncounter Ignition is another Special Ammo for the Heavy Bowgun. When using Wyverncounter, you will attach a mechanism to the end of your Bowgun, which you can then charge and detonate. The longer you charge it, the bigger the damage.

Additionally, this is the Heavy Bowgun's Offset Attack, allowing you to deflect enemy attacks and knock them down. Unlike other offset attacks, however, you cannot perform a follow-up attack after knocking a monster down.

You can freely swap between Wyverncounter Ignition and Wyvernblast Ignition whenever you customize your bowgun.

Wyvernblast Ignition (Heavy Bowgun)

Wyvernblast Ignition is the last Special Ammo for the Heavy Bowgun, and has you shooting a projectile that splits into multiple bombs in mid-air, similar to the Cluster Bomb. This deals multiple instances of damage over an area, and is useful for breaking monster parts.

Similar to the above, you can freely swap between Wyverncounter Ignition and Wyvernblast Ignition whenever you customize your bowgun.

Hello! Wyvernsnipe is no longer in Monster Hunter Wilds, although the Wyvernpiercer Special Ammo performs similarly to it. The page has now been updated to reflect this information. Hope this helps!
