Shelling is the secondary method of attack for the Gunlance and can have multiple variations such as Normal, Wide, and Long in Monster Hunter Wilds. Learn everything you need to know about the Gunlance's Shelling, how its damage output works, skills related to shelling, and the difference between each shelling type.

Gunlance Shelling Explained

A Secondary Way of Attack for the Gunlance

Gunlance Gauges

The Gunlance's two main attack types are its thrust attacks similar to the Lance and its shelling attacks which is the “gun” part of the weapon.

It still functions as a melee weapon so these shellings won't be able to snipe monsters from afar so it's best to treat the shellings as part of the Gunlance's combo rather than a separate moveset.

Gunlance Weapon Guide and New Moves

Shelling Ammo No Longer Consumes Sharpness

Sharpen Meter.png

One notable change made on the Gunlance is that Shelling no longer depletes your weapon's sharpness, allowing you to dish out explosive attacks without having to worry about sharpening your weapon mid-battle!

Ignores Monster Hitzone Values

Unlike regular attacks, Shellings will always deal its fixed damage value no matter what monster part you hit. It will also always pierce through the enemy's hide even if you have the lowest possible sharpness value which makes it a valuable attack type.

Now Scales with Attack and Can Critically Strike

The biggest change to Shelling in Monster Hunter Wilds is its ability to scale with your attack stat as well as its ability to trigger critical strikes.

Gunlances will now have full value when building offensive skills similar to other weapons as both its melee attacks as well as shelling moves will gain increased damage moving forward.

All Gunlance Shelling Types

Gunlance Shelling Types

Normal The regular shelling type. You have the most ammo which is perfect for Burst Fire.
Wide Have the least ammo among the shelling but have the most damage per individual ammo. Also has a higher wyvern's fire damage.
Long Have the farthest range and most damage for charged shelling.

These info are based from previous Monster Hunter games and remains to be tested for Monster Hunter Wilds.

All Shelling Related Skills

Artillery Boosts shelling damage
Capacity Up Increases Shelling ammo capacity.

These are the two main shelling related skills for the Gunlance. However, there are more skills that you'll want to add to your arsenal aside from these two skills.

One of the major changes is that shellings now scale with your Attack so it's still highly recommended to include skills such as attack boost and affinity boosting skills due to its new critical strike interaction.

Hello! Unfortunately, Shelling does not deal Elemental or Status damage, except for a small amount of Fire damage when firing shells. Hope this helps!

Does shelling apply elemental damage as well?
