Monster Hunter Wilds

Flayer Skill Effects

Add to Watchlist (2)

Flayer has a roughly 50% chance of creating wounds faster in Monster Hunter Wilds (MH Wilds). Learn about the effects of Flayer and how it works, if the skill is bugged, and see a list of armor with the Flayer skill.

Flayer Skill Effect

Skill Effects Per Level

Flayer Skill
Makes it easier to inflict wounds. Can also deal extra non-elemental damage upon buildup. (Excludes some attacks.)
Level Effect
1 Makes it ever so slightly easier to inflict wounds. Also deals additional non-elemental damage.
2 Makes it moderately easier to inflict wounds. Also deals slightly more additional non-elemental damage.
3 Makes it easier to inflict wounds. Also deals moderately more additional non-elemental damage.
4 Makes it much easier to inflict wounds. Also deals more additional non-elemental damage.
5 Makes it significantly easier to inflict wounds. Also deals much more additional non-elemental damage.

Flayer lessens the amount of attacks needed to create Wounds on monsters whenever the skill activates. Additionally, once you deal enough damage, Flayer will deal a burst of non-elemental damage to the monster, which can also help create wounds. The strength of the Wound creation and the damage dealt by the burst both increase with Flayer's level.

Title Update 4 Adjustments

Additional Damage Increased

Flayer Damage per Level
Level 1 140 Damage
Level 2 160 Damage
Level 3 190 -> 220 Damage
Level 4 230 -> 300 Damage
Level 5 280 -> 400 Damage

Title Update 4 increased the extra damage dealt by Flayer for levels 3 to 5.

Activation Rate Increased

The activation rate of Flayer was increased from roughly 33% to roughly 50%. These values are based on tests performed before and after the Title Update 4 adjustments.

Additional Weapon Moves Can Now Activate Flayer

Weapon Weapon Move
Long Sword • Spirit Thrust
• Spirit Helm Breaker
• Spirit Blade II
Hammer • Charged Upswing
• Mighty Charge Upswing
• Mighty Charge Slam
Lance • Triple Thrust
Gunlance • Wyrmstake Cannon
• Wyrmstake Full Blast
• Multi Wyrmstake Full Blast
Charge Blade • Sword: Condensed Element Slash
• Axe: Amped Element Discharge
• Axe: Super Amped Element Discharge
Insect Glaive • Descending Thrust
• Strong Descending Thrust
• Descending Slash
• Strong Descending Slash
Heavy Bowgun • Wyvernheart Ignition
• Wyvernpiercer Ignition
Bow • Thousand Dragons
• Piercing Coating on normal arrows and Tracers
• Power Shot (excluding when Piercing Coating is applied)
• Power Volley (excluding when Piercing Coating is applied)
• Flying Swallow Shot (excluding when Piercing Coating is applied)

Additional weapon moves can now trigger Flayer, making the skill more usable across all weapons.

Activates Roughly 50% of the Time

Number of Attacks Flayer Activation Activation Rate
186 88 47.31%

To conduct this test, the target dummy in the Training Area was attacked continuously with the Hope Sword I's Chop attack while at Green Sharpness until a total of 24 Wounds were made.

At Flayer Level 5, the skill activated a total of 88 times out of 186 total attacks, with the burst of damage activating twice. This test puts the activation rate of Flayer at 47.13%, or roughly 50% when rounded up.

Flayer Extra Damage Is Fixed

Flayer Damage per Level
Level 1 140 Damage
Level 2 160 Damage
Level 3 220 Damage
Level 4 300 Damage
Level 5 400 Damage

Upon testing the skill on the training dummy, level 5 Flayer has a fixed damage of 400. The damage dealt is fixed, regardless of weapon type and weapon damage.

Is Flayer Good?

Not Recommended Over Other Offensive Skills

Taking Flayer is not recommended if it is at the expense of other offensive skills that give a straight-up damage increase like Attack Boost and Weakness Exploit.

Some weapons, however, appreciate the ability to inflict wounds faster, like the Long Sword, Sword and Shield, and the Charge Blade.

It is also good to have if you are running the G. Arkveld Armor thanks to its Decimator skill.

Is Flayer Skill Bugged?

Flayer Is Working as Intended

Flayer is working as intended, as stated in Capcom's support page. The issue stems from the skill not being activated by all weapon moves and the vague description. This is the reason why a lot of players believe it is bugged, as it did not behave like a similar skill: Partbreaker.

Partbreaker works by increasing how much "part damage" you deal to monster body parts, making it easier to break horns, sever tails, and more. As Flayer does not do this thanks to its 33% activation chance, it was assumed that the skill was bugged, as the Wound frequency did not appear to reliably increase even with higher Flayer levels.

the activation of flayer is indicated by two small white flash that almost appear as lightning. to clarify this indicates the activation of the increased part damage and NOT the additional non elemental damage which activation rate seems to be lower than 10% and varies by weapon

hey in your "Higher Flayer Levels Makes Wounds Faster" table, you put the exact same values for level 3 and level 4. is this correct?
