Flayer has a roughly 33% chance of creating wounds faster in Monster Hunter Wilds (MH Wilds). Learn about the effects of Flayer and how it works, if the skill is bugged, and see a list of armor with the Flayer skill.

Flayer lessens the amount of attacks needed to create Wounds on monsters whenever the skill activates. Additionally, once you deal enough damage, Flayer will deal a burst of non-elemental damage to the monster, which can also help create wounds. The strength of the Wound creation and the damage dealt by the burst both increase with Flayer's level.
| Level | Number of Attacks | Flayer Activation | Activation Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 187 | 69 | 36.90% |
| 2 | 179 | 53 | 29.61% |
| 3 | 169 | 62 | 36.69% |
| 4 | 169 | 53 | 31.36% |
| 5 | 156 | 54 | 34.62% |
| Total | 860 | 291 | 33.84% |
Flayer has a computed activation time of 33.84%, which is rounded down to 33%, or one in every three attacks. This was computed after attacking the target dummy in the Training Area a total of 860 times over the five levels of Flayer, with the skill activating a total of 291 times. As the skill's activation chance is constant on all levels (only the skill's strength increases per level as per the skill description), it is possible to add together the stats listed above to compute the skill's total activation chance with little to no error.
| Level | Attacks Total (24 Wounds) |
Wound Hit Reduction Rate |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 192 | 0% |
| 1 | 187 | 2.60% |
| 2 | 179 | 4.28% |
| 3 | 169 | 11.98% |
| 4 | 169 | 11.98% |
| 5 | 156 | 18.75% |
To conduct this test, the target dummy in the Training Area was attacked continuously with the Hope Sword I's Chop attack while at Green Sharpness until a total of 24 Wounds were made. This was repeated for all levels of Flayer (from 0 to 5), with the number of attacks at Flayer Level 0 being treated as the control. Without any levels of Flayer, it took a total of 192 attacks to create 24 Wounds, or 8 attacks per Wound.
As can be seen in the table above, higher levels of Flayer decreases the hits needed to create Wounds, with Flayer Level 5 decreasing the total amount of hits needed to create 24 wounds by 36, or about 1.5 attacks per Wound. The only downside is that you are still subject to Flayer's roughly 33% activation chance, making the skill unreliable.
| Flayer Damage per Level | |
|---|---|
| Level 1 | 140 Damage |
| Level 2 | 160 Damage |
| Level 3 | 190 Damage |
| Level 4 | 230 Damage |
| Level 5 | 280 Damage |
Upon testing the skill on the training dummy, level 1 Flayer has a fixed damage of 140. Higher levels deal more damage but the damage is fixed, regardless of weapon type and weapon damage.
Flayer is not recommended taking at the expense of other offensive skills that give a straight up damage increase like Attack Boost and Weakness Exploit.
Some weapons, however, appreciate the ability to inflict wounds faster like the Long Sword, Sword and Shield, and the Charge Blade.
It is also good to have if you are running the G. Arkveld Armor thanks to its Decimator skill.
Flayer is working as intended, as stated in Capcom's support page. The issue stems from the skill not being activated by all weapon moves and the vague description. This is the reason why a lot of players believe it is bugged, as it did not behave like a similar skill: Partbreaker.
Partbreaker works by increasing how much "part damage" you deal to monster body parts, making it easier to break horns, sever tails, and more. As Flayer does not do this thanks to its 33% activation chance, it was assumed that the skill was bugged, as the Wound frequency did not appear to reliably increase even with higher Flayer levels.
Capcom plans to update the skill's description in a future update.

hey in your "Higher Flayer Levels Makes Wounds Faster" table, you put the exact same values for level 3 and level 4. is this correct?
