To break monster parts in Monster Hunter Wilds, players need to repeatedly deal damage to that specific part. See how to break parts, as well as some tips for breaking parts in this guide!

To break monster parts, hunters need to hit the target part several times, and deal enough damage to it. Eventually, the part will break, followed by a notification on the right-hand side of the screen.
Part Breaks will usually stagger the monster you're fighting, or even knock them down, providing a brief window for you to catch your breath or keep going on the offensive.
Also, breaking specific parts on monsters can hamper their abilities. For example, previous games in the series have featured Flying Wyverns who, when having their wings broken, encounter difficulty taking off and flying.

Breaking monster parts also grants extra materials at the end of the hunt. In previous games, certain monster drops have been obtainable exclusively through part breaks, further incentivizing players to destroy parts.
There are two main damage types in the game, which are Sever and Blunt. Monster parts will have varying resistances to either type, represented by their hitzone values (HZVs). A higher HZV for a damage type means it does more damage and has an easier time breaking that part.
For example, a part that resists Sever Damage could be weak to Blunt Damage, requiring a Blunt Weapon like a Hammer to break it. Another instance of this is a monster's tail, which can only be cut with Sever Damage.

Historically, Monster Hunter has had a skill called Partbreaker that players could equip to make breaking parts easier. Though not available in the Open Beta, it is expected that the skill will return once the full game drops.
