It's recommended to bring Antidotes and Nulberries to deal with Rathalos' Poison and Fireblight respectively. Bring Flash Pods so you can easily bring Rathalos down while it's flying. Dung Pods are handy to have as well in case a Rathian joins the hunt.

For survivability, it's recommended to bring healing items like Mega Potions, Herbal Medicines, and Max Potions. Use Pitfall Traps and Shock Traps to trap Rathalos and give yourself damage windows. You'll also want Armorcharm and Powercharm slotted in your item pouch to increase your damage and defense.

How to Beat Rathalos

Rathalos Monster Fight Tips

Use Flash Pods to Blind It and Bring It Down

Being the King of the Skies, Rathalos is most dangerous when it's airborne. Use Flash Pods to temporarily take it out of the sky. You can deal decent damage to it while it's down and blinded.

Do note that the effectiveness of Flash Pods wears off the more it's used, so utilize them wisely.

List of Slinger Ammo

Focus Strike Its Mouth After Its Fireball Attacks

After Rathalos does any of its Fireball attacks, its mouth can become a Weak Point. When it glows red in Focus Mode, use Focus Strike on its mouth to stagger or even topple Rathalos. Look carefully after each fireball attack, as it may be hard to see the Weak Point when it has fire in its mouth.

How to Use Focus Mode and Focus Strike

Break Its Wounds While It's in the Air to Take It Down

When wounds appear on Rathalos, break them while it's airborne to bring it down. Resist breaking the wounds while it's on the ground so you have a way to take it down when needed.

Wounding Mechanic Explained

Break Its Wings to Lessen Its Air Time

Another way to keep Rathalos grounded is to break its wings. This will cause it to struggle with flying and even crash down when attempting to fly.

Additionally, breaking a Rathalos wing drops a Sharp Wing Claw Shard. Picking this up will give you Heavy Slicing Pod, which you can use to help break the other wing and deal decent damage to the monster.

How to Take Down and Hit Flying Monsters

Use Dung Pods to Repel Rathians

While hunting Rathalos, a Rathian may suddenly join to help protect her mate. This may make the fight overwhelming if you need to battle both of them at once. Use a Dung Pod or a Large Dung Pod to separate the two monsters.

Rathian Weakness and Drops

Use Antidotes or Herbal Medicines to Cure Poison

Getting hit by Rathalos' claws can get you poisoned. Make sure to bring items such as Antidotes and Herbal Medicines to cure yourself of Poison when afflicted.

Best Items to Bring on Hunts

Use Nulberries or Dodge Thrice to Cure Fireblight

Rathalos' flame attacks inflict Fireblight. If your Fire Resistance or Blight Resistance is low, it's recommended to bring Nulberries to remove Fireblight when needed. Rolling around three times can also remove Fireblight.

Rathalos Attack Patterns

Moveset and Openings

Moves labeled with a sword icon indicate that you can counter them with an Offset Attack.

Attack Explanation
Incinerate
Rathalos hovers and charges up its flaming mouth to the ground before raising its head, releasing flames in an upward motion. If you're near Rathalos, run behind it before it unleashes the attack. If you're far from it, dodge to the side of the attack before it hits you.
Somersault
Rathalos will get low on the ground, before performing a Somersault into the air. Run away or dodge to the side as Rathalos crouches. Dodge again to avoid the follow-up attack.
Fireball Barrage
Either while flying or on the ground, Rathalos can shoot fireballs at you. Time your side dodges right before the fireball hits you as its trajectory can track your position.
Flame Sweep
Rathalos breathes fire as it spins around, covering the nearby area with flames. Dodge forward or backward to avoid damage.
Flying Bite Attacks
Sword

While flying, Rathalos will bite at you twice in rapid succession. Dodge or run to the side to avoid the bites.
Talon Drop
While flying, Rathalos can dive at you and attack you with its claws. This can both poison and stun you. Either dodge to the side as it dives, or perform a panic dive to avoid its claws.
Fireball
Either while flying or on the ground, Rathalos can shoot one fireball towards your direction. Time your dodge to the side to avoid getting hit.
Talon Stomp
Rathalos will jump slightly before slamming its claws to the ground. Dodge away from the stomp to avoid taking damage.
Tail Sweep
Rathalos uses its tail to do a sweeping attack as it turns around. Dodge forward or backward to avoid taking damage.
Bite Attack
Sword

A basic attack where Rathalos lunges forward and bites you. Dodge to the side before you get bit.
