For survivability, it's recommended to bring healing items like Mega Potions and Antidotes, to deal with the Rathalos's Fireblight and Poison. You'll also want Armorcharm and Powercharm slotted in your item pouch to increase your damage and defense, similar to Armorskin and Demondrug.
For your essentials item, it's best to bring a Rocksteady Mantle, to be able to tank Rathalos's hits while unleashing your combos.

The Rathalos's tail can apply poison on you, specifically if it does it's somersault attack. Should you be hit by this attack, quickly consume an Antidote as the poison can take you down if you are not careful.
Poison Status Ailment Explained
The Rathalos's flame attacks inflict Fireblight. It is recommended to bring a Nulberry to remove this status ailment.
Fireblight Status Ailment Explained
As the King of the Skies, the Rathalos likes to fly around. To counter this, bring Flash Pods and fire it with the Slinger while it is flying to make it drop down.
The Rathalos's mouth is its weakest point, so focus attacks on it whenever possible. To easily knock the Rathalos down, you can focus its legs, as the Rathalos will trip and fall once enough damage is dealt. Once it is knocked down, sever the tail or aim for its head.
How to Take Down and Hit Flying Monsters
To get rid of one of its poison attacks, and to lower its effective melee range, prioritize cutting the Rathalos tail off. You can do this by using a big weapon like a Long Sword or Great Sword, or by knocking it down and using other Slashing weapons.
Rathians in the are will help a worn out Rathalos during the hunt. It is recommended to use Dung Pod ammo using the Slinger to make them flee and make the hunt less overwhelming.

| Somersault | The Rathalos will get low on the ground, before performing a Somersault. If the Rathalos's tail is still attached, it will poison whoever it hits. Avoid this by blocking or dodging to the side. |
| Tail Sweep | The Rathalos uses its tail to do a sweeping attack as it turns around. Dodge backwards to avoid taking damage. |
| Talon Stomp | The Rathalos will jump slightly before slamming on to the ground. Dodge backwards to avoid taking damage. |
| Talon Drop | While flying, the Rathalos will sometimes dive at you and attack you with its claws. This will both poison and stun you. Either dodge to the side as it dives, or perform a panic dive to avoid its claws. |
| Fireball | The Rathalos will shoot one fireball directly forward, or three fireballs forward and to the sides. Either block it or dodge to avoid getting hit. |
| Flying Fireball | The Rathalos can also shoot fireballs while flying. Either block it or dodge to avoid getting hit. |
| Fireball Barrage | While hovering in the air, the Rathalos will shoot fireballs at you. Block them or dodge to the side to avoid. |
| Flame Sweep | The Rathalos breathes fire as it spins around, covering its area near it with flames. Dodge backwards to avoid damage. |
| Incinerate | The Rathalos hovers and charges up its flaming mouth to the ground before raising its head, releasing flames in an upward motion. Run behind or dodge to the side of the Rathalos to avoid damage. |
