How to Catch a Whopper

What is a Whopper?

Whopper Fish are large fish type in the game. Any fish that is notably big is considered as a Whopper Fish. They are usually described as Huge or Large and can be caught in various deep water fishing spots.

Fishing Guide

Follow the Whopper's Movement

Move the rod along where the fish moves.

Slam the fish when it jumps up.

Steer the fish away from rocks and obstacles.

Catching a whopper is a little trickier than the usual fish. This is a battle of wills!

When a fish starts thrashing on the reel, move in the direction it's swimming in to reduce the tension on your line. Brute forcing it will only break the line and lose the fish. Do take a look of where the fish is going, and steer it away from obstacles if it is approaching one.

When a fish jumps out of the water, time it so that when it reaches the highest point, slam it down to tire it out quickly.

Once you tire the fish out and it stops moving sidewards, that's when you start reeling it in.

How to Use Fishing Rod

Use Tuff Joint Bait to Capture Whopper

You can lure a big fish into biting by jigging your rod up and down. They usually ignore smaller baits and require more effort to reel in. It is recommended to use the Tuff Joint Bait, which you will receive at the start of the mission.

You can also use the Duster Rig lure if you plan on catching certain Whoppers like the Gajau.

Where to Catch a Whopper

Whoppers are the biggest fish available in the game, so you will only find them in deeper fishing spots. A recommended location is Area 17: The Great Lake Shore in the Scarlet Forest, where you can catch a Goliath Squid, Speartuna, and a Gastronome Tuna.

Aim for areas where the water is splashing. Even if there are no visible splashes, look carefully for a fish fin as they may still be swimming around.

Hello! You don't need to move the rod upwards when the fish jumps, as it will leap on its own. We have clarified the guide with this. Thank you so much!

So the guide says to move your rod upwards (W on keypad) when the fish jumps, but it says to slam the fish "down". The game prompts you to click LMB. Do you pull up with W while the fish jumps, and then press LMB at its highest point? Is that it specifically?
