You will need 3 requirements to unlock Mizutsune. Your Hunter Rank must be HR21 or above, you must have completed Kanya's first Side Mission, Fishing: Life, in Microcosm, and your game has to be updated with Title Update 1.
After making sure that you have all the requirements, talk to Kanya at the Scarlet Forest Base Camp where you will see a blue exclamation point by her name. This will initiate the Spirit in the Moonlight Extra Mission that will allow you to hunt Mizutsune for the first time.
Spirit in the Moonlight Mission Walkthrough
Completing the Spirit in the Moonlight Extra Mission will grant you access to both Mizutsune and its Tempered variant. However, since Tempered Mizutsune is a Difficulty 8★ monster, it will only start spawning in its locales once you've completed the HR40 Assignment, What Lies Ahead.
What Lies Ahead Mission Walkthrough

Once unlocked, Tempered Mizutsune has a low chance to spawn in the Scarlet Forest and Ruins of Wyveria. Notably, it does have the best chance of spawning in the Scarlet Forest during Fallow weather.
If you have the points for it, it's recommended to rest repeatedly in the Scarlet Forest with Fallow weather to increase your chances of getting Tempered Mizutsune to spawn.

Protect yourself from Mizutsune's Bubbleblight by bringing Cleansers to its hunts. Nulberries are also important to fight against its Waterblight and Fireblight.
Don't forget to bring the essentials, such as healing items, support items, and even traps to make the hunt easier.

| Bubble Color | Effect When Hit |
|---|---|
| White | Damages hunter and inflicts Bubbleblight |
| Green | Heals hunter and inflicts Bubbleblight |
| Red | Temporarily increases hunter's Attack and inflicts Bubbleblight |
| Blue (with flames) | Damages hunter and inflicts Fireblight |
While it's ideal to avoid getting Bubbleblighted, getting hit by some of them may work in your favor. Getting hit by the green bubbles recovers a bit of your health while getting hit by the red bubbles increases your attack power for a short period of time.
Buffs Explained: Which Buffs Stack?
Once its head gets partially broken, it can enter an enhanced state when it gets angered. This is signified by the presence of blue flame in its left eye. Be careful as its attacks become much more aggressive in this state and some of its bubbles become enveloped in blue flame. These blue bubbles deal more damage than the white ones and inflicts Fireblight.
It's recommended to focus more on dodging and blocking while Mizutsune is in this state. Wait for it to exhaust itself before resuming on dealing continuous damage.
I-Frame Guide: How to Dodge Attacks
When Mizutsune does its Charged Water Blast attack, its mouth can become a Weak Point. When its mouth glows red in Focus Mode, use Focus Strike on it to stagger and deal extra damage to Mizutsune.
How to Use Focus Mode and Focus Strike

While Mizutsune is susceptible to Thunder, Dragon, and Ice, it's weakest to Thunder among the other elements. Use Thunder weapons against this slippery monster to end its hunt faster!
Dragon is the second best element against Mizutsune. Feel free to use Dragon weapons as well if you'd like an alternative.
You can actually pop Mizutsune's bubbles with any slinger ammo you have on-hand. If you're fast enough with your Slinger, you can prevent yourself from getting Bubbleblighted this way.
In a pinch, you can also pop the bubbles with your weapon. This does require quite a bit of timing and aiming if you'd like to prevent Bubbleblight.
To cure yourself of Mizutsune's Minor and Major Bubbleblights, use Cleansers! While called a blight, Nulberries do not cure Bubbleblight.
However, it's still important to bring Nulberries as Mizutsune can also inflict Waterblight and Fireblight.

Being inflicted by Bubbleblight hinders your movement and causes you to take extra damage. There are two stages to Bubbleblight, Minor and Major. These just differentiate the severity of the blight. Minor Bubbleblight is signified by an icon with two bubbles, while Major Bubbleblight has three bubbles in its icon.
While you can cure this with Cleansers, you can also prevent Bubbleblight and even utilize it to your advantage with the Bubbly Dance Skill Effect.
Bubbleblight Status Ailment Explained
Moves labeled with a sword icon indicate that you can counter them with an Offset Attack.
| Attack | Description |
|---|---|
| Enhanced State | When angered with a partially broken head, Mizutsune's eye can erupt in a blue flame and its attacks will become more aggressive. Its bubbles will become enveloped in blue flame as well. Avoid these bubbles as they can inflict Fireblight. |
| Charged Water Blast | Mizutsune will charge up water in its mouth before expelling a charged blast of water in front of itself. Dodge or run sideways from the monster as soon as you see the water charging up in its mouth. After the attack, you can also Focus Strike its mouth. |
| Bubble Spray and Launch | In its enhanced state, Mizutsune will do a front flip to launch three flaming bubbles at you. Afterwards, it will quickly launch towards you and spin around. Dodge between the bubbles and immediately start running away to avoid getting hit by its launch attack. |
| Lunge Tackle | Mizutsune will twirl its body before lunging towards you, tackling you upwards with another twirl. Dodge outwards from this attack right before the second twirl. |
| Backflip Tail Smash | Being behind Mizutsune can prompt it to do a backflip before smashing its tail on you. This attack deals a lot of damage and happens very fast, so immediately run or dodge to the side the moment you see Mizutsune look behind itself and do a tiny hop. |
| Twist Launch | Mizutsune will stare at you and slightly raise one of its claws. After doing a croaking noise, it will launch itself toward you while twisting its body. Start running to the side once you see it get into the position or time your dodge right before the launch hits you. |
| Water Beam Swipes | Mizutsune will quickly charge its water jet downwards before swiping the water beam up. It will then swipe its water beam sideways. Time your dodge against the direction of the side swipe to avoid getting damaged. |
| Lunge Swipe | Mizutsune will roar, while lightly wagging its tail, before it lunges towards you to swipe its tail at you. Dodge outwards or sideways right before the swipe hits you. |
| Water Beam Slam | Mizutsune will spray a powerful water beam upwards before aiming it down your direction. Dodge to the side before the beam hits you. Avoiding this attack gives you a decent window for damage as well. |
| Tail Swipe | Mizutsune will briefly raise its tail before swiping it around itself. The direction it will swipe to depends on how its body is leaning. Time your dodge outwards or against the swipe. |
| Body Slam |
Mizutsune will stand on its hind legs before slamming its whole body down towards you. It will slide a bit while releasing bubbles once it hits the ground. Dodge diagonally or sideways from this attack right before it does its slam. |
| Lunge Bites | Mizutsune will rear up with its mouth open before taking lunges forward, biting whatever is in its path. Dodge diagonally near its side, avoiding both the bites and the bubbles coming out its lunges. |
| Slide Charge | Mizutsune will do a hop before launching itself into a sliding charge towards your direction. Dodge or run sideways once you see Mizutsune do its pre-charge hop. |
| Claw Slam |
Mizutsune stands on its hind legs, raising one of its claws, before slamming it down towards you. Dodge into the side of Mizutsune to avoid getting damaged. In its enhanced state, it can do this move twice in a row, at a faster pace. |
| Bubble Slide | Mizutsune will hop and twirl to the side before sliding in front of you, leaving bubbles in its path. Dodge or hit the bubbles to avoid getting Bubbleblighted. |
| Side Bubble Leap | Mizutsune will lean to the side before leaping in an arc to send three bubbles your way. Get out of the way of the bubbles or pop them. |
| Upwards Tail Slap | Being by the side of Mizutsune can prompt it to swing its tail up at you. Dodge backwards as soon as you see the tail swing. |
| Bubble Spray | Mizutsune seems to inhale before spraying three bubbles towards your direction. Go through between the bubbles to avoid getting hit by them. |
| Bite | Mizutsune will open its mouth before attempting to bite you. Dodge away right before the bite hits you. |
| Bubble Spreading | Twirling around itself, Mizutsune spreads its bubbles around the nearby area. Avoid getting hit by these bubbles to avoid getting Bubbleblighted. |
