This guide is about the core differences between alpha (α) armor pieces and beta (β) armor pieces in Monster Hunter Wilds. Read on to learn the difference between alpha armor and beta armor pieces, and see a full list of all the alpha and beta armor sets in the game.
List of Contents

Both Alpha and Beta armor sets share the same defense, elemental resistances, and status ailment resistance stats.
The key difference lies in their potential for skill personalization: Alpha sets provide more pre-set skills, while Beta sets offer greater flexibility for skill customization through more decoration slots that also tend to be higher-level.
If you prefer a fully personalized build, we recommend prioritizing Beta armor pieces and selectively incorporating Alpha pieces with pre-set skills that complement your desired setup.
Builds and Best Armor for Each Weapon

As you navigate through the endgame and progress to a higher Hunter Rank, consider replacing your Alpha pieces with Beta pieces. Their greater flexibility in customization makes them better suited for High Rank hunts!

The main advantage of Alpha armor sets over Beta is that Alpha pieces come with more default skills.
Each piece is designed with synergistic built-in skills, making it a strong choice for players who want immediate benefits without relying on farming for decorations, which have randomized drops.

Beta armor sets have more decoration slots, whereas Alpha pieces typically have fewer or none. This makes Beta armor more flexible, allowing for greater control over your build with Decorations tailored to your desired skills.
While this setup enables access to higher-level skills compared to the pre-set bonuses of Alpha armor, the downside is the time investment required to farm rare jewels for optimal skill slotting.

Although they share the same name, Alpha and Beta armor sets unlock different Group Skills depending on the pieces selected. For example, the Rathian Alpha set grants the Master Mounter skill, while the Rathian Beta set provides Adrenaline.
Master Mounter benefits weapons that rely on frequent mounting, such as the Insect Glaive, whereas Adrenaline is better suited for builds that rely on stamina, like those of the Bow or Dual Blades, so you can factor these in when choosing which armor sets to go with!

You can craft Alpha and Beta armor once you reach High Rank in chapter 4 of the Main Story, and complete the quest Lured by Abundance. This quest will provide the initial materials needed to forge your first Alpha or Beta armor!
