You can unlock Lagiacrus and its Extra Mission, Trembling Blue Currents, by reaching HR31 and completing two specific missions. These missions are "A World Turned Upside Down" and "Forest Doshaguma".
Completing Lagiacrus' Extra Mission, Trembling Blue Currents, will grant you access to hunting its regular and tempered variant.
Do note that since Tempered Lagiacrus is a Difficulty 8★ monster, it will only start spawning once you've completed the HR40 Assignment, What Lies Ahead. Getting past this assignment allows you to get to HR41+.
What Lies Ahead Mission Walkthrough

A way to spawn Lagiacrus and Tempered Lagiacrus is to head over to Iceshard Cliffs and rest in a tent. Set the time to Morning and the weather to Inclemency. Afterwards, check the map if a Lagiacrus has spawned in the Scarlet Forest. While not guaranteed everytime, there is a high chance that doing this can spawn a Lagiacrus or Tempered Lagiacrus.

You may use this method as an opportunity to farm for Lagiacrus and Tempered Lagiacrus investigations. If you're lucky, one could appear with the Lagiacrus Sapphire as a guaranteed reward!

Lagiacrus can inflict Thunderblight. If your Thunder Resistance is low, make sure to carry Nulberries with you before the hunt as they can nullify the blight.
Before hunting, make sure to always bring Mega Potions and materials to craft them with. Traps, and mantles can also help your hunt go much smoother.

After it does its Thunder Discharge attack, its back can become a Weak Point. If its back glows red in Focus Mode, Focus Strike it to stagger Lagiacrus and deal decent damage. This may possibly even knock it down!
How to Use Focus Mode and Focus Strike
Knock Lagiacrus down by attacking its head. After enough damage is dealt to its head, it'll go down and you'll have a good damage window.
If you and Lagiacrus end up in Area 15 of the Scarlet Forest, make sure to utilize the Dam Rubble trap located by the waterfall. Trigger it with your Slinger to deal massive damage to Lagiacrus. This is especially helpful when fighting its tempered variant.
How to Set and Activate Traps
As Lagiacrus moves its way toward Area 19 in the Scarlet Forest, it will swim underneath some Unstable Rubble in Area 13. With good timing, you can drop this on Lagiacrus to knock it out and deal huge damage to it!
Lagiacrus can inflict Thunderblight, which paralyzes you if you've accumulated enough of the blight. This leaves you open to lethal attacks that can cart you. Make sure to bring Nulberries to the hunt to cure the Thunderblight quickly.
You can also opt to increase your Thunder Resistance, either through skills, armor, or meals. Reaching 20 Thunder Resistance makes you completely immune to Thunderblight.
Thunderblight Status Ailment Explained
If you fail to deal enough damage to Lagiacrus while underwater, it will initiate its devastating discharge attack. The good news is you can survive this attack by swimming away far enough the moment it starts the attack.
As it's difficult to dodge Lagiacrus' underwater body tackles by evading or swimming sideways, it's more reliable to use the ascend move to dodge this attack.
After Lagiacarus does its Underwater Thunder Shot, its mouth becomes a Weak Point. After avoiding this attack, immediately cling unto its head and attack it while it's glowing red to deal significant damage!
Besides dropping Submerged Rubble on top of Lagiacrus, you can actually bait it to crash into it as well. This still deals a good amount of damage while temporarily immobilizing Lagiacrus. Just remember to dodge its charge before it hits you!

|
Once you've followed Lagiacrus into Area 19 of the Scarlet Forest and dealt enough damage to it, Lagiacrus will dive into the water to prepare for a devastating discharge attack. Follow the scoutflies or the indicator on the map to approach the edge and dive after the monster!
Once underwater, you can swim around using the directional buttons. You can also ascend or descend to position yourself. Additionally, make sure to dodge Lagiacrus' attacks and projectiles using the evade button.
Your main goal underwater is to deal enough damage to Lagiacrus to stop it from fully charging its discharge attack. One of the main ways of doing this is to aim and fire the Hook Slinger to cling unto the monster. This will open up either knife or weapon attacks, similar to when you mount on a monster on land.
You can use light or heavy knife attacks to create wounds or perform a big attack with your weapon while you are clinging on Lagiacrus. Just remember to dismount when Lagiacrus is about to do an attack to avoid getting damaged.

On the underwater walls, there are Sharp Barnacle Clusters that you can grab with your Slinger. This will give you Helix Piercing Pods which can be used to deal damage to Lagiacrus. Maximize your damage output by aiming these pods at Lagiacrus' head or rear while its body is straight. Pierce shots deal more damage the more times it goes through the monster's body.
Submerged Rubble act as environmental traps underwater. Using your Slinger, trigger these traps when Lagiacrus is underneath them to deal massive damage to the monster!
Moves labeled with a shield icon indicate that you can trigger a Power Clash with them. On the other hand, moves labeled with a sword icon indicate that you can counter them with an Offset Attack.
| Attack | Description |
|---|---|
| Devastating Discharge | If you fail to deal enough damage to Lagiacrus during its underwater fight, it will unleash a powerful attack that can cart hunters immediately. To survive this attack, swim as far as you can once you see Lagiacrus forming its whirlpool. |
| Thunder Discharge | Roaring into the sky with lit-up spines, Lagiacrus will charge up the thunder in its body and expel it around itself. As soon as you see it rear up with its back spines bight blue, run away from its vicinity as this attack takes up a big area. This attack is amplified and has a much bigger area of effect when Lagiacrus is angered. |

| Bite Lunge |
Lagiacrus will rear its head up before lunging at you with a big bite. Dodge sideways from the lunge to avoid getting damaged. |
| Sideways Thunder Trail | Charging thunder in its mouth, Lagiacrus will expel it as a projectile that trails sideways. Dodge forward or backward from the trail. |
| Bite and Tail Sweep |
Lagiacrus will prepare to bite sideways in a swooping motion before turning around to hit you with its tail. Dodge through or backwards from the bite before moving away from the tail sweep. Mind the timing on the tail sweep. |
| Trailing Thunder Shot | Lagiacrus will build up thunder in its throat before expelling it towards you. Thunder trails behind the projectile. This attack can be done twice in a row. Dodge or run to the side before the projectile hits you. |
| Twisting Tail Swipe | Lagiacrus will twist its body into itself before swiping its tail at you. Dodge backwards from the swipe to avoid getting damaged. |

| Uppercut Bite | Lagiacrus will rear its head back before quickly extending its neck forward to bite you. Dodge to the side to avoid the bite. |
| Back Tail Sweep | Being behind Lagiacrus can prompt it to sweep its tail at you. Dodge through or away from the sweep. |
| Bite Sweep |
Lagiacrus will quickly bite from the side. Dodge through or backwards from the bite. |
| Underwater Charge | Under the water, Lagiacrus will curl up its body then propel itself forward into a charge towards you. Evade or swim away to the side before the charge hits you. |
| Underwater Tackle | When underwater, Lagiacrus will turn its side at you and tackle in your direction. It can repeat this move twice in a row. Evade or ascend from the tackle to avoid getting damaged. |
| Underwater Thunder Shot | Under the water, Lagiacrus will shoot a thunder projectile towards you. Dodge in any direction away from the projectile right before it hits you. |
