To perform a sneak attack, you'll need to approach a monster and use the sneak attack button while it hasn't noticed you. Make sure that you're hidden before getting close to the monster to ensure you get a sneak attack off.

Keep in mind that sneak attacks have a 5 minute cooldown before you can start doing it again on unaware monsters so try to use your Ghillie Mantle when the cooldown is finished.

No Need to Move Slow

If you're approaching a monster, you don't need to move slowly to perform a sneak attack. As long as you're approaching from behind or from a blind spot, the sneak attack will be successful.

Sneak Again When Undetected

If you fast travel to another location and want to sneak up again, simply approach the monster, and you should be able to do so. If not, wait at least 5 minutes to remove yourself from its radar.

How to Fast Travel

Only Works on Sheathed Weapons

Sneak attacks won't work if your weapon is unsheathed. To perform one, make sure to sheathe your weapon first.

How to Sneak Past Monsters

Use a Ghillie Mantle

MH Wilds - Ghillie Mantle
Another way to hide from monsters is by using the Ghillie Mantle from your item menu. This is a cloak that prevents monsters from seeing you for a short time or until you attack or take damage.

How to Use Ghillie Mantle

Hide in a Bush

MH Wilds - Bush
While you're out exploring, you'll come across tall grass that you can hide inside. As long as you're not engaged in combat, you can crouch in these to avoid detection from monsters.
