Explanation of Player Stats
Health, Stamina, Attack, and Defense are the main player stats in Monster Hunter Wilds. Read on to learn more about how each player stat works and how they affect your gameplay here!

Explanation of Each Player Stat

Health

Health Bar Explanation

How much health you have is indicated by the green bar on the top left of your screen. The maximum health you have can be boosted further by eating meals or using Ancient Potions and Max Potions.

Once you run out of health, your character will faint and cart back to the nearest Camp. When going on Quests and Hunts, you can usually faint up to 3 times before it fails and makes you start the quest again. This can vary between other quests as some may have modified failure conditions.

How to Heal and Increase HP

Red Health Recovers Gradually

When you get hit by an attack, you lose a portion of your health and will leave a red bar that recovers back to green slowly over time. This natural recovery is hard to rely on since it takes too long to recover fully but can be boosted with certain skills such as Recovery Up.

Stamina

Stamina Bar Explanation

Stamina is determined by the yellow bar on the top left just below the Health Bar. This is mostly used for dodging, sprinting, and executing certain weapon moves such as Bow attacks and the Demon Mode of Dual Blades.

Certain skills such as Stamina Surge can help with managing your stamina well to make your hunts easier.

How to Restore and Increase Stamina

Maximum Stamina Decreases Over Time

Maximum Stamina Decreases Over Time

Your stamina will always recover quickly once it has been used. However, your maximum stamina will decrease over time as well but can be recovered using Well-done Steaks, Energy Drinks, or eating meals.

Attack

Attack Stat Explanation

Your Attack stat determines how much damage you can deal to monsters and can be found in your weapon equipment info. This does not mean your weapon will always deal the amount of attack you have as there are certain calculations that come with this such as Sharpness, Motion Value, and Hitzone Value.

If you want to increase your attack even further, your best options would be upgrading your weapon, using items and weapon buffs, and equipping attack skills such as Attack Boost. Keep in mind that this only boosts your physical damage and will not affect other stats such as elements and status effects.

How Does Attack Work?

Affinity

Affinity is your Critical Hit Chance and can also be found in your weapon equipment info. This allows your weapon to deal 25% more physical damage at the cost of more sharpness consumption for melee weapons.

Make sure your Affinity is more than 0% or else your attacks will not critical hit in the first place. However, certain skills such as Weakness Exploit will not display their added affinity so try to keep this in mind.

Elemental Damage

Weapons can also have Elemental Damage on top of their physical damage which can be found just below their Sharpness. This is extremely useful for hunts as every monster has different types of elemental weaknesses so make sure to craft and equip the weapon with the right element in mind.

How Does Weapon Elemental Damage Work?

Status Effects

Certain weapons can apply Status Effects as well such as Poison, Paralysis, Sleep, and Blast. Although this does not add more damage to your weapon, it will build up status ailments on the monster. This means fast weapons that can hit multiple times will be extremely effective for applying Status Effects.

Defense

Defense Stat Explanation

The Defense stat reduces the damage you take from attacks which can be found in your equipment info. It is best to prioritize this stat in situations where you are having a hard time surviving a difficult hunt.

Some of the best ways to increase your defense would be using Armor Spheres to upgrade your equipment, food, and item buffs, and equipping Armor Skills such as Defense Boost.

Resistances

Aside from defense, Elemental Resistances are important as well since they reduce the damage you take from certain elements. Having a negative resistance will result in increasing the damage you take from that specific element so make sure you know the element of the monster's attacks to help you survive.

What Does Elemental Resistance Do?

Weapon Defense Bonuses

Weapon Defense Bonus Explanation

Your weapon type will also factor in what type of damage you take less from. Ranged weapons reduce elemental damage, while melee weapons reduce physical damage. So Bow users might be more resistant to a Rathalos's fireball, while Great Sword users will withstand its tail spin attacks more effectively.

Additionally, your weapons now have a Defense Bonus stat that can help boost your defense even higher, allowing you to survive monster attacks better.
