Pay attention to what your Palico is saying during the fight as they will mention if the monster is weakening and ready to capture. If they mention that the Yian Kut-Ku looks weak, it's ready for capture!
A monster that's ready for capture will also visibly limp and have panicked or labored breathing when it's moving around, which is also indicated by the flat heartbeat on its monster icon on the lower left part of the screen.
A skull will also appear next to its map icon to indicate that it's close to dying. When this appears, hold off on attacking the Yian Kut-Ku and make preparations to capture it!
Once Yian Kut-Ku is weak enough to capture, you'll need to lay a Pitfall Trap or Shock Trap to stun the Yian Kut-Ku. Once the monster is trapped, quickly switch to your Tranq Bombs and throw two of it on the Yian Kut-Ku to capture it!
If the monster is sleeping, you can actually use the Tranq Bombs on it first before laying down a trap. Just make sure to move quick as the effects of the Tranq Bombs can dissipate.

Yian Kut-Ku has large and sensitive ears, making it vulnerable to Sonic Pods. Using one will disorient the Yian Kut-Ku and force it to stay in place. This gives you a window to attack it without fear of retaliation.
The downside is that once the Yian Kut-Ku recovers from the Sonic Pod, it will immediately enter Rage mode, so be ready for that. It may also develop an immunity to Sonic Pods while angered.
The Yian Kut-Ku's peck attack is one of its most iconic attacks and can constantly knock you down if you don't get out of the way immediately. When the Yian Kut-Ku prepares its peck attack, either run away, block the attacks, or get behind the Kut-Ku.
Yian Kut-Ku often come in monster herds (usually pairs), meaning you might face multiple Yian Kut-Kus. It's best to isolate them from each other for a much easier fight.
In these cases, use Dung Pods or Large Dung Pods fire them off your Slinger to disband the group. Afterwards, focus on hunting one of them.
Yian Kut-Ku can inflict Fireblight with its fire attacks. If your Fire Resistance or Blight Resistance is low, make sure to roll thrice or use a Nulberry to get rid of Fireblight.
You can also roll into bodies of water to quickly put out Fireblight, such as when you are near the streams or rivers of the Scarlet Forest.
| Move | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Side-to-Side Fireball Spit | Yian Kut-Ku prepares to charge forward, then does so while spitting fireballs from side to side. When angered, Yian Kut-Ku does this attack much faster. Run or dodge to the side to avoid getting hit by the charge and the fireballs. |
| Fireball Spit | After rearing up, Yian Kut-Ku will shoot a lobbed fireball at the player. Dodge towards or sideways from the monster to avoid this attack. |
| Charge | Yian Kut-Ku will swiftly jump into position, before digging its beak underground, then charge towards your direction. If the monster is charging at you, dodge diagonally towards it. |
| Peck | Yian Kut-Ku will peck in front of it like a chicken. This can potentially stunlock you, especially since Yian Kut-Ku usually can do this multiple times in a row. Dodge sideways from the pecks and attack from the side to avoid getting hit. If you're close enough, you can also dodge diagonally towards the monster or through its legs. |
| Tail Swipe | Yian Kut-Ku will quickly wiggle its tail before swiping it around itself once or twice. Though it deals low damage, it can easily disrupt unsuspecting hunters. Pay attention to its body language and dodge away from the swipe. |
| Rush | The Yian Kut-Ku will rush at the player, either by gliding close to the ground or by running. If the monster is rushing towards you, dodge diagonally against it. |
