Critical Status is a Weapon Skill in Monster Hunter Wilds that increases status build-up whenever you land a critical hit. See a comprehensive test of the effects of Critical Status and a list of weapons with the Critical Status skill.

Skill Effects Per Level

Critical Status Skill
Increases abnormal status effects (paralysis, poison, sleep, blast) when landing critical hits.
Level Effect
1 Slightly increases abnormal status effects when landing critical hits.
2 Increases abnormal status effects when landing critical hits.
3 Greatly increases abnormal status effects when landing critical hits.

Critical Status increases status buildup whenever your attacks deal critical hits. Note that this does not increase the damage of your status attacks, just increases buildup when dealing critical hits.

Note: The numbers are meant to represent the amount of hits needed to proc the Status Ailment. This was tested in the Training Area with a build that has 100% Affinity. Ranged uses Lv 2 Poison while Melee uses Sleep with 150 damage using Hammer's Mighty Charge.

Critical Status, unlike its description suggests, only increases the build-up of Status Ailments upon landing a Critical Hit. For example, the damage ticks of Poison will not be increased, but instead faster to apply!

In summary, Critical Status makes it so that Status Ailments will occur faster as you will need a lesser amount of hits to fill up the threshold if you are running an Affinity build!

Upon testing, the data shows that the first level of Critical Status has no significant effect for Bowguns but does so with Melee Weapons. You will only observe changes when you slot in the second and third levels of Critical Status, wherein you will need to hit less to inflict Status Ailments.

This is especially the case on the third and fourth proc as it gradually lessens the amount of hits needed. Critical Status will get better as the hunt progresses longer since you can inflict a single ailment more consistently.

Only Works for Paralysis, Poison, Sleep, and Blast

As mentioned in the description, Critical Status only works for Paralysis, Poison, Sleep, and Blast status effects. This skill does not work for Stun, which is mostly affected by another skill - Slugger.

Slugger Skill Effects

Works Best With the Bowguns

Given that Bowgun ammunition guarantees the Status damage upon hit, having Critical Status allows you to apply Status Ailments quickly with each successive proc.

Inconsistent With Melee Weapons

Depending on whether or not you are using a quick or slow melee weapon, the effects of Critical Status may vary since the damage only applies 1/3 hits at a time for melee weapons.

These findings mean that a faster weapon like the Dual Blades can fully utilize Critical Status, while a Great Sword can have more trouble applying it.
