Ways to Prevent Flinching |
---|
|
In previous titles, the main solution to preventing a flinching in multiplayer is by equipping at least one level of the Flinch Free skill. This skill may be obtained through various ways, one is mainly as a skill from an armor piece.
As of the beta, there is still yet to be direct access to this skill other than speific weapon mechanics such as the Orange Extract of the Insect Glaive.
Most attacks will usually not be interrupted by flinch during their animation and in cases such like charging with either the Great Sword or Hammer.
This means that you're often safe from interrupts from hunters when attacking the monster and you'll often want to avoid standing still in the middle of the fight.
Weapons like the Dual Blades's Demon Mode and the Orange Extract of the Insect Glaive will naturally grant the hunter immunity to flinch for a set period of time. Take note of these in case you don't have Flinch Free for multiplayer yet yourself!
Another way to prevent flinching in multiplayer is by constantly moving. Being flinched during this state will still sometimes cause your attack to buffer, but this will at least prevent you from being pushed back.
When you are flinched while standing still, you should still also be able to recover from the animation quickly by moving or attacking at least.
A Charge Blade user struggles to use the Charge move in the middle of two Long Sword players.
While you still have no Flinch Free skill in multiplayer, the best solution to preventing flinch is by spacing yourself from other hunters when attacking a monster. Hunters should be mindful on which monster part their weapon will best perform by knowing the damage type of their weapon attacks.
This will help set right away where you want to be during the fight. For example, weapons that deal Sever damage will excel in tail-cutting, while those that deal Blunt will be best positioned near the monster's head.
What Causes You to Flinch |
---|
|
Pratfall and Launch states are some additions to flinching, since they can happen due to specific moves used by different types of weapons. Unlike flinching, they are not easy to recover from and will often keep hunters in a locked animation.
Flinching Examples |
---|
Flinching from a Lance. |
Flinching (also with a Seikret) from a Hammer. |
Nearly all weapon attacks, when hitting a hunter, will cause Flinching in multiplayer. Flinching is a standing state where you are in interrupted animation (similar to being pushed) but neither in a pratfall state (knocked on your rear) or knocked down. Note that Flinching also applies to Seikrets.
Flinching is more prominent with wide-swinging or faster-hitting weapons like the Long Sword and Dual Blades since flinch counts on weapon hits rather than weapons' strength.

・Dash Attack |
Some weapons have moves that will cause a Pratfall, which is being knocked onto your rear rather than a simple knockback. When using these weapons, you'll want to be mindful if a hunter is right in front of you since pratfalls are not easy to recover from.
Hunters riding a Seikret hit by these moves will also cause them to fall off their mount.

・Upswing |
---|
The Hammer's Upswing attack is the only known move so far that is capable of launching hunters upward, even those while riding a Seikret. In addition, the Seikret hit by this move will also be sent sliding into the ground.
While this may seem like a nuisance, being launched upwards can actually beneficial for using Jump Attacks that enable monster mounting. They may also be used to save someone by launching them away from an attack when they can't dodge.
In some cases, such as being stunned or paralyzed, being flinched can help you recover faster only once you start your recovery animation from these negative status. However, they will not cure you of the status.
Based on testing, harder forms of knockback such as the Hammer's Upswing launch will no longer launch hunters out of such states. Though, they can still be done once the hunter starts the recovery animation.
If you're aiming to save hunters from oncoming big damage while immobilized, then using a Life Powder is the safest way to do so. Their Palicos, if present, will also try to knock them out of negative status.
