If you don't have high Poison Resistance, it's important to bring Antidotes to the hunt in case Rathian inflicts Poison on you. It's also recommended to bring Nulberries to quickly get rid of Fireblight.
Don't forget to bring healing items such as Mega Potions and Herbal Medicines. Additionally, you can utilize items such as traps and the Powercharm and Armorcharm to make your hunt go smoother.

Rathian inflicts Poison through its spikes located on its tail. To get rid of Rathian's poison-inflicting attacks and lower its attack range, prioritize cutting its tail off. You can do this by using Sever weapons like Insect Glaives or Lances.
Blunt, Sever, and Shot: Weapon Damage Types Explained
As a Flying Wyvern, Rathian is susceptible to getting knocked down from the air when flashed. Utilize Flash Pods to bring it down and stop it from doing its dangerous aerial attacks.
Whenever Rathian spews out fireballs, its mouth can become a Weak Point. When its mouth glows red in Focus Mode, Focus Strike it to stagger Rathian and deal extra damage. The red glow may be hard to see when it has fire in its mouth, so just look carefully everytime it does fireball attacks.
How to Use Focus Mode and Focus Strike
Rathian can inflict Poison using its tail as long as it's not severed. Make sure to bring Antidotes before fighting Rathian to cure yourself of Poison when needed.
Besides Poison, Rathian can also inflict Fireblight with its fireballs. If your Fire Resistance or Blight Resistance is low, you can cure Fireblight by rolling thrice or using a Nulberry.
What Does Elemental Resistance Do?
Moves labeled with a sword icon indicate that you can counter them with an Offset Attack.
| Attack | Description |
|---|---|
| Tail Swing |
Rathian can swing its tail towards you from the ground or in the air, in an attempt to inflict Poison. From the ground, you can tell it's coming when it looks like it's appearing to leap. In the air, it will swing its tail at you once you see it quickly rear its tail forward. Dodge sideways from both variations of the attack. It can do this attack twice in a row. When angered, Rathian will swing its tail much quicker, so be wary of that. |
| Charged Fireball | With fire in its mouth, Rathian will take steps back before unleashing a big, charged fireball. Once you see it rear backwards, start running to the side and dodge away before the fireball hits you. |
| Dashes |
With its mouth agape, Rathian will choose a direction and dash straight through, being able to change direction twice before ending it with a bite. If this attack is directed at you, keep dodging diagonally through the dashes and the final bite. |
| Air Charge | Before flying to your direction, Rathian will flap its wings and swoop into the charge. Get out of the way of the charge once you see it swoop or time your dodge right before it hits you. |
| Twist Swipe |
Rathian will open its mouth and spread its legs to prepare twisting its body up and swipe its tail at you. It will start flying after this attack. Dodge diagonally or backwards from the swipe. |
| Fireball | Rathian will rotate its neck in a half-circle before releasing a fireball. Dodge sideways from the fireball if it's headed your way. When angered, Rathian will spew out three fireballs instead of one, in a cone formation, starting from the middle first then the sides. Make sure to position your dodges carefully either between the fireballs or outside the cone formation. |
| Bite Dash | With its mouth agape, Rathian will choose a direction and dash forward, stopping with a bite. Dodge or run sideways as soon as you see it start to dash towards you. |
| Tail Swipes | Before swiping its tail around, Rathian will look back and wiggle its tail. To avoid getting hit by the swipes, dodge towards the monster. |
| Bite |
Rathian will open its mouth wide before chomping sideways. Dodge backwards or diagonally before you get bit. |
