Armor Upgrade Changes
Ver.1.021: Upgrade Limit for Rarity 5+ Armor Further Increased
The Version 1.021 update brought upon another increase to the upgrade limit for Rarity 5+ Armor when it released on August 12, 2025 (ET). More upgrade levels were added on top of the last upgrade increase from Title Update 1.

How to Unlock the Smithy and Upgrade Armor
Complete Chapter 2 to Unlock Armor Upgrading
To unlock the ability to upgrade armor, you need to complete the Toward Fervent Fields mission in Chapter 2, where you hunt down a Rompopolo.
After slaying the monster, Gemma will tell you that you can now upgrade any armor that you have with Armor Spheres.

How to Upgrade Armor
Upgrade Armor at the Smithy
You can go to Gemma in your Base Camp and select Forge/Upgrade Armor. You will need Armor Spheres to upgrade the level and defense of the armor that you want to improve.
Use Armor Spheres to Level Up
You will need Armor Spheres to increase the level of your armor. The upgrade menu would tell you how many levels you need to get it to maximum, and how many points you need in order to reach the next level. Each type of Armor Sphere is worth a specific amount of points, with the rarer ones giving more.
Do note that the points required to upgrade an armor piece will increase as it levels up. Additionally, upgrading an armor only increases its defense stat, but the skills and other stats will not change.

These are the points each armor sphere can give as points when upgrading your armor. It's essential to use the higher ranked armor spheres first then start using the lower leveled armor spheres to avoid some loss in points. This can maximize the amount of armor points you can get when upgrading your gear.
How to Get Armor Spheres
Obtain From the Smelting Foundry
Once you get to the Oilwell Basin, you can look for Roqul in Azuz to smelt Armor Spheres in exchange for Monster Parts. There are three types of Armor Spheres you can choose from which all upgrade your armor's level, but the Advanced Armor Sphere gives the largest upgrade.
Note that you will only unlock Roqul and the Smelting Foundry once you finish Chapter 2-3, Hopes of Home.
Complete Quests
A majority of Quests give Armor Spheres as rewards! Be sure to complete them when you can so you can upgrade your armor.

The event quests listed here are quests with Armor Spheres as their main rewards. The higher the difficulty of the quest, the better value the Armor Sphere rewards are gonna be. Just take note of their Hunter Rank requirement and the duration of their quests' availabilities, as event quests have a limited time duration.
Event Quests Schedule and Rewards
Hunt 9-Star Monsters in HR100+
Along with the Ver. 1.021 Update came the appearance of 9-star difficulty monsters. While the main reward for these hunts are Glowing Stones, they can also reward a decent amount of higher-value Armor Spheres, like Hard Armor Spheres and Heavy Armor Spheres.
Once you're HR100 or above, you can find 9-star monsters on the map and hunt them in Field Surveys or Investigations. Do note that these hunts are meant for endgame and are much more difficult than usual hunts.
