Monster Hunter Wilds - Blunt, Sever, and Shot Types Explained

Blunt, Sever, and Shot damage types affect how you deal damage in Monster Hunter: Wilds. Learn about how different damage types work, what weapons deal Blunt, Sever, or Shot damage, and what they are best for!

Blunt Damage Type

Blunt Damage is a damage type often used on a monster's head due to its knockout (KO) properties. But it will still deal proper damage to whichever part is susceptible based on a monster's weakness chart.

Visually, a weapon will most likely deal Blunt Damage if its striking end is a flat or round surface as opposed to a sharp one.

Some weapons, even if primarily dealing Sever or Shot damage, have moves that are capable of dealing Blunt damage. In the case of Bowguns, Blunt damage will come from ammo (specifically Sticky Ammo).

Sever Damage Type

Sever Damage is typically the damage type used in breaking fragile parts such as tails, appendages, or wings. But just like Blunt Damage, its effectiveness will still depend on which monster part is susceptible to it according to a monster's weakness chart. A key benefit to remember for Sever damage is that it can cut tails.

Visually, you can tell a weapon will deal Sever damage if its striking end is usually a sharp edge.

Shot Damage refers to damage done by ranged weapons via projectiles: arrows (for Bows) or ammo (for Bowguns). Arrow coating and ammo can be changed to suit various purposes, such as Power Coating to increase bow arrow damage.

By default, attacks from these weapons will not deal KO damage unless they are using Blunt-specific ammo and moves (Sticky Ammo for Bowguns and Arc Shot for Bow). In the same way, they will not deal Sever damage unless they are Sever-specific ammo and moves (Slicing Ammo for Bowguns and Dragon Piercer for Bows).

Do Damage Types Matter

Matters for Monster Hitzones

Monsters have body parts that will take more damage from a specific damage type. Depending on their damage type weakness chart, they may, for example, take more blunt damage to the head than they'll do from the tail.

Some monsters will have hitzones that differ from the usual, such as Gravios which will take less Sever damage to its body. Make sure to inspect a monster's damage-type weakness if you haven't!

Damage Type is Calculated for Hitzones

Raw Damage Calculation
((Attack / Bloat Value) × Sharpness Modifier × Motion Value × Hitzone Value × Quest and Rage Modifier x Critical Modifiers
=
Raw Damage

In the overall damage computation formula for raw damage, Damage Types come into the picture in the context of monster hitzones. Hitzones cover specific parts of the monster, so Damage Types will have a lot of influence depending on the damage type your weapon deals.

What are Hitzone Values?

Matters for Cutting Tails

Cutting a monster's tail for carving materials can only be done with the Sever damage type. Take this into consideration if you are aiming to get a material drop where its chances are higher from a cut tail.

Hello, Thank you for pointing this out! The Lance does deal blunt damage with Guard Counters and an extra Shield Bash after Guard Dash. The page has been updated to reflect this information!

Lance can shield bash with the counter and guard hop attack. I know they do stun but I think they are also blunt.
