Blastblight is a Status Ailment in Monster Hunter Wilds that causes an explosion on affected targets. See an explanation for Blastblight, how to apply it to monsters, and what skills and builds work with it in this guide!

Blastblight Status Ailment Explained

Applies a Delayed Explosion Effect

When the Hunter is afflicted with Blastblight, the blight will explode after a period of time if the ailment is not taken care of, causing the hunter to take a chunk of damage.

Can Explode if Hit Hard Enough

The blight can also explode when hit by a powerful monster attack, adding the explosion's damage on top of that attack for a potentially deadly combo.

Can Be Cured With a Nulberry

To cure Blastblight, players can use a Nulberry while the explosion is still counting down. Note that once the explosion occurs, Blastblight is removed and can not be cured by a Nulberry at that point.

Can Also Be Cured by Rolling

Rolling multiple times while afflicted with Blastblight will also cleanse the status effect. This is an alternative for when Nulberries are short on supply!

How to Inflict Blastblight on Monsters

Use Weapons With Blast Elements

To cause Blastblight on monsters, players need to inflict Blast Buildup by attacking with weapons that have the Blast Element. Once enough buildup is applied, the monster will suffer an explosion and take damage.

Note that the status buildup is dependent on attacks hitting, so faster weapons that can land lots of hits are recommended to apply Blastblight. The Dual Blades and Sword & Shield comes to mind as the perfect weapons for the job.

All Weapons and Guides

Equip Bows With Blast Coating

Certain Bows can make use of Blast Coatings to apply Blast Buildup with their attacks, similar to the buildup caused by Blast Element melee weapons.

Use Endemic Life

Certain species of Endemic Life can also cause Blastblight-like effects on enemies. The Blastoad can cause a similar explosion, while also knocking down affected monsters. Note that the Blastoad also affects allies, so be careful with it.

Monsters Gain Resistance With Each Activation

As with all status effects, monsters will gain resistance to Blast with every activation, lowering Blast's value the longer the hunt is. Make sure to end hunts quickly to make the most out of Blast's damage.

Benefits of Applying Blastblight

Applies a Fixed Burst of Damage

Blasting monsters will cause them to take a fixed chunk of damage from the explosion that occurs when the status triggers. It can amount to a significant amount of damage over repeated triggers. From testing, the damage ranges from 100 to 150.

Although this may not seem like much, repeated activations of Blast can quickly add up, resulting in a lot of damage.

Poison vs. Blast: Which is Better?

In most cases, Blast is better than Poison. Although Poison deals more damage than Blast per activation, Blast can be activated more often, making the total damage add up faster.

Additionally, all monsters have a consistent 2★ weakness level to Blastblight (except for Nu Udra at 1★), compared to Poison where the weakness level ranges from 1★ to 3★ with only 4 monsters having a 3★ rating and 8 monsters having a 1★ rating. As such, Blast is more reliable over more monsters.

Best Status Effects to Use

Works on All Monsters

As mentioned above, Blast works on all monsters. This means that compared to Elemental weapons where some monsters are completely immune to a certain element, you can bring Blast weapons on any hunt, regardless of their Elemental resistances.

Perfect for Solo Play

When playing in multiplayer, Blast's effectiveness on monsters become relatively smaller thanks to its fixed, non-scaliing damage and the monster's increased HP in multiplayer. As such, Blast shines best when used in solo play, as its damage relative to the monster's HP is bigger compared to in multiplayer.
