Monster Hunter Wilds

How Does Weapon Elemental Damage Work?

Add to Watchlist

A weapon's Elemental Damage can take advantage of a monster's weakness in Monster Hunter Wilds. Learn more about elemental damage, how it's computed, and which weapons it's good on here!

What is Elemental Damage?

An Additional Damage Source

Overall Damage
Raw Damage + Elemental Damage

When computing how much damage your attacks deal on a monster, it is added to the amount of Raw Damage that your attacks deal, which is based on your weapon's Attack.

Damage Formula Explanations

Computed Similarly to Raw Damage

Elemental Damage Calculation
((Elem. Attack / 10) × Elem. Sharpness Modifier × Elem. Hitzone Value × Quest and Rage Modifier) x Elem. Critical Modifiers
=
Elemental Damage

To compute how much Elemental Damage your attacks deal, you will need to use an equation similar to how you compute a weapon's Raw Damage.

Similar to Attack, which must be divided by its Bloat Value to get the True Raw of the weapon, a weapon's Elemental Attack must be divided by 10 before being plugged into the equation..

What Affects Elemental Damage?

Armor Skills Can Increase Elemental Damage

Certain Armor Skills can directly increase a weapon's Elemental Attack by a flat amount, which in turn increases the Elemental damage that weapons can deal.

Other skills like Critical Element increases your effective Elemental damage output by allowing them to be affected by your Weapon's Affinity.

List of All Skills

Elemental Attack Has a Cap

+350 Element 1.9x Element

370 Base (720 Limit)

400 Base (760 Limit)

All the elements have a cap that depends on the base element of the weapon. The game determines the limit by either adding 350 to the base element or multiplying it by 1.9x (or a 90% increase), and then selecting the larger of the two. As a rule of thumb, a base of 390 element or higher will use the 1.9x multiplier.

Hunting Horns Can Apply Elemental Buffs

Hunting Horns have a variety of buffing songs, one of which is the Elemental Attack Boost song. When played, this song will increase your Elemental Attack by a certain percentage, increasing your Elemental damage output.

Raw vs Elemental: Which is Better?

Elemental is Good for Fast-Hitting Weapons

Weapons that Maximize Elemental Damage
Sword and Shield Sword and Shield Dual Blades Dual Blades
Charge Blade Charge Blade Light Bowgun Light Bowgun
Insect Glaive Insect Glaive Bow Bow
Heavy Bowgun Heavy Bowgun -

※ These are the weapons that maximize Elemental Damage. While they can still be built for raw damage, elemental damage just makes them deal more damage than standard raw affinity builds.

Because Elemental damage does not rely on an attack's Motion Value when computing its damage, it will always deal maximum damage during attacks.

As such, fast hitting weapons like the Dual Blades, as well as a Bowgun's Elemental Ammo, can maximize Elemental damage output, as you can quickly apply multiple instances of Elemental Damage.

The only thing to take note of when using Elemental builds is a monster's Elemental Hitzone Value, as that can heavily affect how much Elemental damage you deal.

Raw is Better for Slow Weapons

Weapons that Maximize Raw Damage
Great Sword Greatsword Long Sword Longsword
Hammer Hammer Hunting Horn Hunting Horn
Lance Lance Gunlance Gunlance
Switch Axe Switch Axe Charge Blade Charge Blade
Heavy Bowgun Heavy Bowgun
Basic Ammo
-

※ These are the weapons that maximize Raw Damage. While they can still be built for elemental damage, they cannot bring out the potential as well as the other weapons.

When it comes to slow weapons, it is better to focus on Raw Damage to take advantage of their high Motion Value attacks to deal massive amounts of Raw Damage.

Paralysis and Sleep unfortunately do not register as Elemental damage. An Artian Weapon with 3x Elemental Boosts under its Reinforcement Bonus does affect Paralysis by increasing its inherent stat number, although how good of a weapon it is will vary depending on what your build focuses on. Hope this helps, and happy hunting! :D
