Skill Effects Per Level

Guard Up Skill
Allows you to guard against ordinarily unblockable attacks.
Level Effect
1 Reduces damage taken by 30%.
2 Reduces damage taken by 50%.
3 Reduces damage taken by 80%.

Lets You Block Unblockable Attacks

Guard Up gives you the ability to block unblockable attacks, with higher levels of the skill increasing your damage reduction against said attacks. Take note that this skill does not work on weapons that cannot block attacks.

This skill should not be confused with the Guard skill, which reduces knockback and blocking stamina consumption.

How to Block and Perfect Guard

Damage Reduction Doesn't Work on Normal Attacks

Although this skill provides damage reduction, it only works on normally unblockable attacks. This skill will not reduce any damage taken from normally blockable attacks.

Attacks That Guard Up Can Block

Zoh Shia's Downward Fire Breath

With Guard Up equipped, you are able to block Zoh Shia's downward flame attack, making it easier for melee weapon users to stay within range of Zoh Shia.

Equipping Guard Up allows you to block a monster's grab attack, keeping you safe from the potential damage.

Uth Duna's Giant Waves

Guard Up also lets you block Uth Duna's giant waves that they summon while in Area 17 of the Scarlet Forest.

Take note that you will still be knocked back a good instance even if you block this attack.

Gravios Gas Attacks

With Guard Up, you are able to block Gravios' gas attacks, be it the sleep or explosive one. Additionally, blocking it will protect you from the status effects that the gas can apply.

Ajarakan's Ground Explosions

One of Ajarakan's moves involve him heating the ground in front of him before causing it to explode. Guard Up lets you block the explosion with ease.

Omega Planetes Laser and Flamethrower Attacks

Omega Planetes has multiple laser and flamethrower attacks that require Guard Up to block. Omega Planetes is fairly aggressive so try to anticipate its unblockable attacks.

AT Nu Udra Oil Explosion

Arch-Tempered Nu Udra has an oil explosion attack that also requires Guard Up to block. It has a noticeable wind up so you have ample time to react.

Attacks That Guard Up Can't Block

Zoh Shia's Arena Wide Attack

Although you can block Zoh Shia's downward flame attack, you are not able to block its arena-wide attack, even with Guard Up. You will still have to either destroy the Wylkcrystals or run to the edge of the arena to avoid damage.

Jin Dahaad's Arena Wide Attack

You also cannot block Jin Dahaad's arena-wide attack. The only way to survive it is by hiding behind a giant ice chunk that you can drop into the arena.

Omega Planetes Delta Attack

Omega Planetes' Delta Attack cannot be blocked. Hunters must defeat the Nerscylla Clone to generate a shield that can provide cover against the Delta Attack.
