What is Affinity

Affinity is the chance of inflicting a critical hit with your weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds. Read on to learn more about what is affinity and how to increase affinity here!

What is Affinity?

A Chance to Deal More or Less Damage

affinity
Affinity is the chance for your attacks to deal a Critical Hit, allowing your weapon to inflict more physical damage. Critical Hits are attacks that can deal 25% increased damage and consume more sharpness compared to your regular hits.

Keep in mind that affinity is capped at 100%, meaning all your attacks will be critical hits once you reach it.

Elemental Damage is Not Counted

Raw Elemental Total Damage
(No Crit)
Total damage
(With Crit)
50 10 60 72.5

Affinity is fixed only for raw physical damage and will not affect any elements your weapon has. This means that even if your weapon have elemental values, when your attack triggers an affinity hit, only your weapon's attack stat's damage will be increased while your elemental damage's value will only be added to the computation.

To allow your elemental attacks to trigger critical hits, you'll need to equip a Critical Element which will allow your elemental hits to also gain bonus damage from critical strikes.

How Does Weapon Elemental Damage Work?

Critical Boost Further Increases Damage

Having the Critical Boost skill increases the damage of your critical hits from 25% up to 40%, depending on the level. This is an important skill to have if ever you are using a crit build as it can increase your overall damage immensely.

Critical Boost Skill Effects

Negative Affinity

negative affinity
Weapons with negative affinity will have a chance to deal 25% less damage in proportion to how much affinity you have. This means if you have -30% Affinity, you will have a 30% chance to deal 75% damage on every hit.

How to Increase Affinity

Best Ways to Increase Affinity

Equip Affinity-Raising Skills

Skill Effect
Critical Eye Icon Critical Eye Increases affinity.
Weakness Exploit Icon Weakness Exploit Increases the affinity of attacks that exploit a monster weak spot.
Critical Draw Icon Critical Draw Increases affinity for a short time after performing a draw attack.
Agitator Icon Agitator Increased attack and affinity when a monster is enraged.
Latent Power Icon Latent Power Temporarily increases affinity and reduces stamina depletion when certain conditions are met.
Maximum Might Icon Maximum Might Increases affinity if stamina is kept full for a period of time.
Affinity Sliding Icon Affinity Sliding Increases your affinity temporarily when sliding on terrain.
Antivirus Icon Antivirus Once infected, makes it easier to overcome the Frenzy and increases affinity if cured.
Foray Icon Foray Increases attack power and affinity against large monsters affected by poison or paralysis.
Tetrad Shot Icon Tetrad Shot Increases the affinity of bowgun ammo/coatings from the fourth shot and attack of the fourth and sixth shots.

The best way to increase your affinity is by equipping skills that can raise them such as Critical Eye and Weakness Exploit. These skills can be obtained from your armor, weapon, or decorations to help you reach that 100% affinity you are aiming for.

Some skills such as Weakness Exploit will not show and add up to your Affinity stat when you check it so if ever you are building a crit build, it might not be optimal to aim for 100% affinity on your weapon.

Use High-Affinity Weapons

As you progress further in the game, you will unlock more weapons that can come with High-Affinity stats which you can find just below the Sharpness and Element stats. Make sure to craft these as they will highly benefit the consistency of your damage output for your crit build.

Overcome the Frenzy

Frenzy is a negative Abnormal Status Effect usually contracted from Gore Magala. Overcoming the Frenzy status gives you bonus affinity for a certain duration which is great for reaching that 100% affinity you are aiming for.
