For a Solo challenge, we recommend using the Hammer in Set A. Although slower than other weapons, its Blunt damage makes it a powerful choice, especially against the Rathian.
Blunt damage is most effective when consistently aimed at its head, which is the monster's weakest point. Repeatedly stacking Blunt damage on the Rathian's head will eventually KO it, opening a window for an optimal combo.
During these opportunities, you can unleash a full Big Bang combo, finishing with a Mighty Slam for maximum damage output.

In Multiplayer, the ideal pairing is the Sword and Shield from Set A alongside the Switch Axe from Set B. This combination ensures optimal damage output, with both weapons offering high mobility and consistent DPS.
The Sword and Shield user will act as a supportive damage dealer, using Shield Bashes to generate stun with Blunt damage while also targeting the Rathian’s wings and tail when the opportunity arises.
Meanwhile, the Switch Axe user should focus on attacking the Rathian’s head for maximum damage. To minimize downtime and maintain constant pressure, it's crucial to initiate a Morph Slash when switching between Axe and Sword mode, rather than manually morphing.
Always Deal Consistent Damage
The best way to secure an A Rank is by dealing consistent damage to the Rathian's head while it's on the ground, and targeting its tail or legs while airborne.
Minimize downtime by avoiding knockdowns, refraining from item usage, and skipping weapon sharpening. Every second spent dealing damage counts in the arena, so make sure to make the most of your uptime!
How to Unlock Arena: Rathian
Only Playable from HR 21 or Higher
To proceed with the Arena: Rathian quest, you'll need to be at least HR 21 to be able to take on the quest at the Grand Hub.

Additionally, if you're able to get a B ranking or higher, you'll unlock be able to craft the Earrings of Dedication α armor piece.

An Armorcharm and Powercharm can be obtained from any Arena Quest. There is no need to complete the quest to get them, as you can simply start the battle then exit immediately to receive the items.
