Best Armor Augments and Armor Recommendations
Sneak Attack works by checking your position relative to the monster the moment you attack. This means that as long as you are in the rear half of the monster during an attack, the raw damage dealt will be boosted even if the attack hits the front of the monster. Also, note that the direction you're facing doesn't matter.
Sneak Attack Lv. 3 was equipped for all comparisons on the page. In the clip above, each shot to the head from behind the monster did 157 damage. When moving to its front half, each shot to the head dealt 131 damage instead, which means Sneak Attack gave a 20% damage boost.
Attack from the Front | Attack from Behind |
---|---|
Shelling (Burst Fire) | |
40 Damage per Shell |
47 Damage per Shell |
Wyrmstake Cannon | |
118 Damage |
140 Damage |
Wyvern's Fire | |
540 Total Damage |
624 Total Damage |
Sneak Attack works on virtually all Gunlance attacks. This means shelling, the Wyrmstake Cannon, and even Wyvern's Fire all receive a boost to their raw damage. This is one of the few skills that can actually increase the damage of shells, so Gunlance mains should consider having this skill.
Attack from the Front | Attack from Behind |
---|---|
79 Damage per Phial |
95 Damage per Phial |
Sneak Attack can increase the power of Phial attacks, but this only appears to boost Charge Blades with Impact Phials.
Attack from the Front | Attack from Behind |
---|---|
24 Damage per Phial |
25 Damage per Phial |
Element Phials still seem to get a small boost, likely due to the small raw portion of the attack, but it's nowhere near 20%.
Shockwave from the Front | Shockwave from Behind |
---|---|
709 Damage |
851 Damage |
For Hunting Horns, the additional damage dealt by shockwaves from moves like Sonic Wave and Sonic Bloom is also affected by this skill. For Sonic Bloom, in particular, it's the position of the cocoon at the moment of detonation that determines if the boost applies, as demonstrated above.
Attack from the Front | Attack from Behind |
---|---|
Wyvernsnipe | |
306 Damage per Blast |
306 Damage per Blast |
Thunder Ammo | |
103 Damage |
115 Damage |
Explosive ammo, such as Sticky Ammo or Wyvernsnipe, does not receive any damage boost from Sneak Attack. Elemental Ammo does get a boost, but only for the raw portion of the shot, meaning the overall damage boost is less than 20%.
