Primodrial Malzeno's Gunlance, the Silver Sploder, opens up several build options thanks to its 3 Lv 4 Slots and Lv 8 Normal Shelling. It can be used as a general build in Anomaly Investigations thanks to its boosted recovery when under Bloodblight. It has lower raw compared to its competition, but its Dragon element can make it stand out when hunting monsters weak to it.
Heaven-Sent is still a must-have to sharpen without needing to sheathe and to reload quickly. Redirection and Intrepid Heart help with maintaining the buff. Frenzied Bloodlust allows for up to four Wirebugs at once, which lets us use Silkbinds like Reverse Blast and Bullet Barrage as much as possible. Bullet Barrage overcomes Bloodlust's Frenzy fairly quickly, making it a solid choice for the build. Reverse Blast is key to this build for its iframes and as a quick way to fire off a Burst Fire/Full Burst. Hellfire Cloak is included to drop hellfire to topple monsters and deal extra damage. Since using Reverse Blast toward monsters allows you to reach their back at times, Sneak Attack is also added to boost shelling damage. |

Title Update 5 brings a lot of new gifts to the Gunlance with Heaven-Sent and Frenzied Bloodlust. While useful on their own, having both opens up new options for the Gunlance. Amatsu's Gunlance is also a noteworthy addition as it boosts Silkbind damage by around 10%. It's also a Long Gunlance making it perfect for Hail Cutter and Bullet Barrage.
Heaven-Sent eliminates the need for sharpening and also reloads all shells with Switch Skill Swap. Paired with Redirection and Intrepid Heart, it can help with survivability while maintaining the buff. Frenzied Bloodlust allows you to hold up to four Wirebugs at a time, making it useful for spamming Bullet Barrage when there's a big opening or repeatedly using Hail Cutter to fire off more Wyvern's Fire. Hellfire Cloak allows for Coalescence to trigger more often and lets you drop hellfire to topple monsters when using Silkbind Attacks. This skill can be swapped for Guard or Guard Up depending on your preference. |

Title Update 4 brings another way to boost shelling damage with Frostcraft. Gunlance doesn't usually play well with sheathing often since Wind Mantle and Ground Splitter lose their effects. However, for playstyles focused on normal shelling and charged shelling, Frostcraft's boost is appreciated.
This build forgoes high DPS and encourages defensive play with several comfort skills. Wind Mantle is kept since it still helps with reducing cooldowns for key Silkbind Attacks such as Ground Splitter, Hail Cutter, and Reverse Blast. Hellfire Cloak is included to potentially stagger monsters and provide additional damage when using Reverse Blast. Weapon augments are required to slot in anti-species jewels and to increase shelling level to 8 since these are needed to maximize shelling damage. Armor augments are optional, but feel free to add the skills listed above. |

Since the Free Title Update 3, Gunlances can now reach Lv.8 Shelling with the Shelling Level Boost Augment, making the Gunlance even more viable than before! With this new feature, there is more variety to picking a Gunlance for each Shelling type. Augment the recommended Gunlances above to max shelling level except the Crunchy Cornpopper, which is already at Lv.8 when crafted.
For other Weapon Augmentations, we recommend adding Lv.3 Attack Boost for the Normal and Long Gunlances and Lv.4 Attack Boost for the Wide Gunlance. Powder Mantle provides an even more explosive boost to your burst damage. Activating this skill is easy with the infinite burst combo! We focused on maxing out the Attack Boost skill, as the explosive damage from Powder Mantle scales with your raw attack value. Sneak Attack is a unique skill for the Gunlance as it provides a 20% boost to all your attacks, including shelling and Wyvern's Fire, provided you hit the monster from its back half. This becomes more valuable in multiplayer as you'll have more chances to stay behind the monster. This build focuses on shelling damage but skills that affect your melee damage are also added to accomodate different playstyles. With Mail of Hellfire equipped, make sure to stay on the Red Swap Scroll for an increase in raw attack. However, keep your guard up; this will also lower your defense values! |

Even with the introduction of Shelling Level Boost, the Torci Da Lavater remains a viable option for crit builds thanks to the flexibility offered by its high base affinity and slots. To overcome its relatively low attack, we'll be augmenting it entirely for Attack Boost, as the build itself already provides Lv 8 shelling and purple sharpness.
Unlike our Sneak Attack build, this build has more comfort skills like Evade Extender, Guard, and Wirebug Whisperer. Shelling staples like Load Shells and Artillery are kept to maximize Full Burst Fire damage as Normal wants to make the most of all its shells. |

Build Merits and Notes |
---|
This build takes advantage of the unique affinity mechanics of the Chaotic Gore Magala Gunlance, Mauer/Guerre, allowing us to reach 100% affinity with just a single point of Weakness Exploit and a few levels of Critical Eye. Bloodlust is also included to self-inflict the Frenzy, as this is required to convert the negative affinity into positive affinity.
Our skill choices also have some room for comfort like the addition of Evade Extender for positioning. Both Wirebug Whisperer and Wind Mantle are also added to allow Silkbind Attacks like Bullet Barrage and Hail Cutter to be used more frequently. For weapon augments, the Shelling Level Boost is mandatory to reach Lv 8 shelling. The remaining slots can be used to extend sharpness or attack as necessary. |

Build Merits and Notes |
---|
With the introduction of the Shelling Level Boost Augment, Wide Gunlances with status and element have become more useful as they work well with the poke-and-shell playstyle. Make sure to also include a Rampage Slot Augment to slot in the anti-species jewels for more damage for all your attacks. The rest of the slots can be filled with an Attack Boost Augment.
Our choice of skills aims to improve both raw and shelling damage by hitting weakpoints and then quickly shelling. Chameleos Blessing can extend the time a monster is poisoned, making Foray active for longer. Wirebug Whisperer and Wind Mantle are also added to reduce the cooldown for Silkbind Attacks like Ground Splitter and Bullet Barrage. Switch Skills like the Erupting Cannon and the recently buffed Ground Splitter are recommended to improve both the poke and shelling damage of the weapon. Guard Reload can be used as Wide can only hold three shells at most, while Blast Dash gives much needed mobility over Charged Shelling. |

As the Shelling Level Boost augment requires some grinding to reach, we're still recommending the same Lv 8 Shelling Gunlances as the MR6+ other builds. This build also doesn't require armor augments or a high anomaly research level.
Sneak Attack is a unique skill for Gunlances as it provides a 20% boost to all attacks, including shelling and Wyvern's Fire, provided you hit the monster from its back half. This becomes more valuable in multiplayer as you'll have more chances to stay behind the monster or if you can use Blast Dash or Reverse Blast to reach behind the monster. This build also assumes a minimum of a Lv.2 slot weapon, so you're free to add skills like Stun Resistance or Flinch Free depending on the free slots your weapon has. |

Build Merits and Notes |

Normal Gunlances are most effective when frequently unloading all shells with Burst Fire. Since the augment to increase shelling level requires grinding first, using this set will help you raise your MR and Anomaly Research Level with its high damage output. Most of the build only requires parts from MR 10 monsters, making it more accessible. Hellfire Cloak may be dropped to Lv.3 if the Hellfire Jewel+ 4 isn't available yet.
This set mostly utilizes the Ground Splitter and Reverse Blast Silkbind Attacks. The latter pairs well with the additional damage from Hellfire Cloak and makes unloading a full burst faster. Since expensive Silkbind Attacks aren't used often, higher levels of Wirebug Whisperer are optional. The build only requires weapon augments, specifically Sharpness Boost to extend it to purple. |

Both Long and Wide Gunlances benefit greatly from a Lv. 8 shelling level. However, the shelling level augment requires grinding to unlock, so the best Gunlances without requiring this upgrade will be used instead.
Due to having fewer shells than Normal, these will rely less on the Blast Dashes and instead use Evade Extender for mobility. Roar of the Canyne can take advantage of Hail Cutter to use Wyvern's Fire and Bullet Barrage more often. The Crunchy Cornpopper should equip the Erupting Cannon and use Ground Splitter to maximize thrusting and shelling damage. Armor augments are not needed for both Wide and Long builds. However, if rolling for skills, Wind Mantle will surely help with speeding up cooldowns of Silkbind Attacks. |

Wirebug Whisperer is added to reduce the cooldown of your wirebug charges, allowing you to use Bullet Barrage and other switch skills more often. You can use stick to Ortlinde+'s tree until you unlock Pyre Rakna-Kadaki's weapon tree. You can then swap Ortlinde+ with Scarlet Lamplance and then upgrade it to Scarlet Lamplance+ once you obtain Kushala Daora materials at MR5. |

Hi, is there no middle updated build between the TU1 and TU3? For someone that may not be playing with enough people to take advantage of attacking monsters from behind? Or is that build still the best regardless?
