The Learn the Lance quest unlocks a Switch Skill for this weapon type called Spiral Thrust.
Spiral Thrust is a two-step maneuver to counterattack. It uses the shield to parry then uses Wirebugs to pull you forward. Use this to confuse your targets and let out a flurry of strikes.
Reposition using the Left Analog after the first dash or halt altogether.
