Powder Activation Varies per Weapon

The Powder Mantle skill will activate after dealing a number of hits from your weapon (not counting a Buddy's or other non-weapon-related sources). Hits from Kinsects, Wyrmstake Cannon, and phials count. The number of hits required before activation will depend on the type of weapon equipped and skill level (weapon tree and rarity are not counted).

The table below details our tests with each Master Rank Kamura weapon in the Training Area and can serve as an approximation of the number of hits needed before a powder effect appears around the hunter.

Weapon No. of Hits (Lvl. 1) No. of Hits (Lvl. 2) No. of Hits (Lvl. 3)
Great Sword 13 10 7
Long Sword 26 20 14
Sword & Shield 34 26 17
Dual Blades 78 56 38
Lance 27 20 14
Gunlance 30 23 16
Hammer 27 20 14
Hunting Horn 31 22 16
Switch Axe 31 22 16
Charge Blade 52 38 26
Insect Glaive 33 24 17
Light Bowgun 300 225 150
Heavy Bowgun 100 75 51
Bow 150 112 75

Powder Changes Color Over Time

Once a red powder effect appears around you, its color will alternate between blue and red every 10 seconds regardless of whether you are attacking or not.

When the powder is red, you will lose your powder effect when you are sent flying and take explosive damage as a result (in a similar fashion to Hellfireblight).

When the powder is blue, the next hit with your weapon will cause explosive damage. Take note that this is not considered as Blast damage and will not be affected by Blast Attack. You will not lose your powder effect if you are sent flying while the color is blue.

Blue Powder Explosion Scales with Attack

The damage done by the powder's blue explosion scales with attack power.

To increase the overall damage dealt with the explosion, consider pairing Powder Mantle with other damage-boosting skills like Attack Boost, Agitator, Peak Performance, Foray, Resentment or Resuscitate.
