To get Afflicted Dire Scale, you have to go on A★5 Anomaly Quests to hunt down specific Afflicted Monsters. We've listed them below for your convenience. For every broken part and every carve (body or tail), you will have a 40% chance to get Afflicted Dire Scale.

You can also obtain Afflicted Dire Scale from breaking parts and carving the same monsters listed above in Lv. 51–100 Anomaly Investigations.
Beyond these levels, you may receive anywhere between 1 to 5 Afflicted Dire Scale as a Quest Bonus Reward in addition to the higher tier afflicted material, but you won't get them as carve or break rewards anymore.
We recommend hunting an Afflicted Mizutsune with a Light Bowgun build like the one linked below to easily farm for Afflicted Dire Scale.
Use this ranged weapon to create some distance between you and the monster to lessen the risk of being hit with a powerful move while dealing damage from far away as quickly as you can.

Around Anomaly Research Level 161, you'll be able to exchange 100 Investigation Coins for an Afflicted Dire Scale at Bahari's Anomaly Research Lab.
You can use Afflicted Dire Scale to augment your weapon at the Smithy. Afflicted Dire Scale gives you a total of 20 points. Please note that you can only augment Rarity 10 weapons!
