The Study the Sword & Shield quest unlocks a Switch Skill for this weapon type called Metsu Shoryugeki. This is a jumping Wirebug attack that uses the shield to uppercut the target. You can perform a Guard at the start and can finish off with a Falling Bash.

I don't get why you can attempt this quest with anything but a sword & shield. What's the point of doing it with anything else? Feels like either laziness or design flaw.
