Lord Kamai Story and Lore

The Youkai & Samurai

Kamai Kenji is first introduced in the cutscene during the Haunted Tales quest of the Akitsu Kimodameshi event. According to the legend, he is the youkai who met a samurai during the Mikawa Flower Festival hundreds of years ago.

He welcomed the human and celebrated the fetival together, competing on the game Akitsu Hazura that ended on a draw.

A Duel Every Ten Years

Upon learning that his new friend is a swordsman that travels the world for formidable opponents, Lord Kamai Kenji made a deal with the samurai to meet for a duel every ten years which the latter happily agrees.

Friendship between a Human and Youkai

The two met again ten years later, becoming best friends as they spent time together drinking, travelling, and sparring. Another decade passed and the samurai managed to defeat Kamai on their duel. Astonished, Kamai trained to become stronger for their next duel.

However the samurai did not show up after ten years because he was busy defending the border due to a war. Kamai was unconcerned as ten years were nothing to a youkai's lifetime.

Last Game of Akitsu Hazura

They met once again but the samurai was already old and weak unlike Kamai who remained the same. Realizing that having a duel is impossible, Kamai asked for a last game of Akitsu Hazura with the samurai instead.

The samurai gave his best but stopped halfway through as he is too weak. Kamai remained silent before uttering the words "what a shame".

Befriended the 3rd Generation Heir

During the The Currents of Life quest, Yae Miko explained that there are still more to their story. The samurai, Yanagibashi Takuto became the founder of the Souran Isshin Art. A swordmanship style he developed while dueling with Kamai.

Lord Kamai Kenji befriended the 3rd Generation Heir of Souran Isshin Art, Tominaga Masanori and fought with his side until their final moments, resolving his regrets at the end.
