Crucabena was the original Knave and 4th of the Fatui Harbingers, and was in position in her own right. She was ruthless, agile, powerful, and held enough influence to sway circumstances to her favor.

Along with being The Knave comes being in charge of the House of the Hearth, an orphanage dedicated to taking homeless children in and raising them. Behind its doors, however, something more sinister laid within.
The children of the house came to know Crucabena as “Mother”. While donning a maternal persona with a caring smile, she was, in fact, as merciless and brutal as any Harbinger would be.
Under Crucabena's tutelage, the true purpose of the House of the Hearth was to raise children to become deadly combatants and pit them against each other to the death to crown its “King”—the worthy heir of The Knave.
Those who died were simply disposed of. Those who survived with more permanent injuries were either sent away on deadly missions or sent to The Doctor for experimentation—mere tools expendable at any time.
Il Dottore (The Doctor) Story and Profile
Among the many children she raised, Crucabena also took care of Peruere, an anti-social child that spent most of her time alone. Peruere's largest anomaly was an unnamed curse, which Crucabena was fully aware of.
Little is known about how she, the House, or the Fatui managed to keep it at bay, and while it did not pose a serious threat, Crucabena was wary of it.
Even with all the orphans of the House calling her “Mother”, Crucabena was an actual biological mother to a girl named Clervie, whom she took to the House of the Hearth at the age of 6.
Upon learning of the House's true objectives, Clervie tried to talk Crucabena into freeing her, only to end up being bruised and battered after their arguments. Their relationship has been shaky ever since.
Given the goal of the House of the Hearth to have all its children kill each other, it was only a matter of time before her own daughter Clervie was also killed... by none other than Peruere.
This drove Peruere to a fit of rage, eventually confronting Crucabena. Though Crucabena was deadly in her own right, Peruere's curse proved to be far more powerful, leading to her untimely demise.
Crucabena's death left the House of the Hearth without a guardian and the 4th position of the Fatui Harbingers unoccupied. After being arrested and taken to Snezhnaya, Peruere was pardoned by the Tsaritsa herself and given these titles.
Leaving behind her childhood name, Peruere rose to become Arlecchino, the new Knave and 4th of the Fatui Harbingers, and the House of the Hearth's strict and unfeeling, yet honest and genuine “Father”.
