Halfdan Story and Lore

Elite Royal Guard of Khaenri'ah

Halfdan is a part of the Elite Royal Guard of the Black Serpent Knights. During the day of disaster 500 years ago, Captain Dainsleif ordered Halfdan and the rest of the Black Serpent Knights to protect Khaenri'ah and its people at all costs.

Even after being cursed by the gods, the Black Serpent Knights can still be seen upholding their duty, protecting the people of Khaenri'ah who are now Hilichurls.

Halfdan's Sacrifice

The Abyss Order created a device to lift the curse, but as Dainsleif guessed it would not work and will only bring suffering. Once the device was activated, the Hilichurls, Black Serpent Knights, and even Dainsleif suffered a burning sensation. Halfdan charged forward to try and stop the device by covering it with his body, taking the brunt of the effects.

The Traveler manages to deactivate the device but it was already too late. Halfdan's soul later appears and apologizes to Dainsleif for failing in his duties.

Requiem of the Echoing Depths

While exploring the ruins of the Inverted City in the Chasm with Dainsleif, the party encounters a Black Serpent Knight who Dainsleif recognizes as one of the elites of the Royal Guard of Khaenri'ah, Halfdan. They follow Halfdan around the ruins until they find a mysterious device at the center which turns out to be an Abyss amplifier device to be used to cleanse the curse put on the people of Khaenri'ah.

The device doesn't work however and instead of cleansing the curse, the Hilichurls, the Black Serpent Knights, and even Dainsleif are in agony. A struggling Halfdan appears and runs towards the device to cover it with his body to stop the effects. The Traveler manages to shut down the device, but its too late and Halfdan has already died. After turning to leave, Halfdan's soul appears in front of the party and apologizes to Dainsleif for failing in his duty to protect Khaenri'ah and its people. Dainsleif corrects him that he has faithfully upheld his duties for the last 500 years, Halfdan smiles before disappearing.
