Who Activates Elemental Mastery?

The One Who Applies the 2nd Element

Genshin - Activates Elemental Mastery

The character that applied the 2nd element is the one whose Elemental Mastery is taken into account. You should upgrade your Main DPS's Elemental Mastery especially those that have Pyro, Hydro, or Cryo element to improve their damage output.

Sub-DPS and Supports generally do not need Elemental Mastery, as they are the ones applying the 1st Element. Instead, they benefit more from Energy Recharge to output more Elemental Bursts.

Best Characters to Use Elemental Mastery

Characters to Build Elemental Mastery

Best Characters for Elemental Mastery Stat
Hu Tao Image Hu Tao • Hu Tao in tandem with Xingqiu can deal consistent Vaporize. It is recommended to have some Elemental Mastery on her artifact substats.
Kazuha Image Kazuha • Kazuha transforms Elemental Mastery into Elemental DMG Bonus for the teammate based on the Swirled element. Stacking Elemental Mastery will also increase his own personal damage from Swirl.
Nahida Image Nahida • Nahida provides high Elemental Mastery bonus to an active party member in the duration of her Elemental Burst. It is also recommended to stack EM stats for Nahida as each point of her EM surpassing 200 grants 0.1% DMG bonus and 0.03% CRIT Rate for her Elemental Skill.
Alhaitham Image Alhaitham • Alhaitham's abilities scale with Elemental Mastery along with ATK. He thrives with Elemental Reactions involving Bloom or Quicken, which makes him dependent on the stat.
Sucrose Image Sucrose • Sucrose provides Elemental Mastery to her teammates based on her own Elemental Mastery. Stacking Elemental Mastery on her Artifacts provides a huge damage increase to your Main DPS.
Tartaglia Image Tartaglia • Tartaglia's Elemental Burst scaling is huge. It is recommended to have some Elemental Mastery on him if you are planning to trigger Vaporize.
Venti Image Venti • Venti's Elemental Burst infuses an Element and constantly Swirls it to all enemies trapped inside the vortex. Having Elemental Mastery weapons such as The Stringless is recommended.
Xiangling Image Xiangling • Xiangling can consistently Vaporize or Melt when she's teamed up with fast Elemental appliers like Tartaglia or Xingqiu for Hydro.

Elemental Mastery either as main stat or sub stat on artifacts or weapons can greatly increase their damage output or their support capabilities. It is recommended to build some Elemental Mastery on their stats to maximize their effects.

How much Elemental Mastery is good?

500~1000 for Elemental Mastery-Stacking Characters

For characters that primarily stacks Elemental Mastery, such as Anemo or Dendro Supports or Sub-DPS like Sucrose, Kazuha, or Nahida, you need as much Elemental Mastery as possible. A minimum of 500 and 1000 Elemental Mastery at max is the best for such characters.

100> for Melt or Vaporize Reactors

For characters that thrives from reactions like Melt or Vaporize, an Elemental Mastery count of around 100 is best for such characters. If you can't reach this number yet, you can make up by stacking more CRIT Rate and DMG as possible.

Elemental Mastery vs. ATK

Elemental Mastery Alone is Not Enough

Genshin - Searing Onslaught Damage

Elemental Mastery increases the damage multiplier on the initial damage you deal to enemies when causing an elemental reaction. This means raising only Elemental Mastery won't deal high damage if you don't increase your character's ATK stat.

Balance Elemental Mastery and ATK/Crit

Do take note that Elemental Mastery has diminishing returns if you do not build enough ATK or Crit Rate/Crit DMG on them, so make sure you are also building these important stats!

A healthy build is to find a middle ground between raising Elemental Mastery and other stats like Crit DMG and ATK, as most Elemental Skills scale with the latter.
