Competitive Analysis

Shadow Ball is one of the best Ghost-type moves for special attackers due to its base power, accuracy, and secondary effect of having a 20% chance to lowering the opponent's Special Defense by one stage.

This move is recommended for Ghost-type Pokemon that focus on special attack such as Gengar that receive STAB, and its widespread coverage to a lot of Pokemon make this move viable to use.

Shadow Ball is also a great move to have to give Pokemon access to Max Phantasm in decreasing the Defense of opposing Pokemon by one stage.
