Competitive Analysis

Poltergeist is a great physical STAB move for *physically offensive Ghost-type Pokemon. It's especially viable in both battle formats since nearly all Pokemon have held items.

Just be careful against opposing Pokemon with one-use items, such as berries, as the move will fail on any Pokemon not holding a held item.
