While Sumeru's Desert Ruins are buried beneath earth and sands, Fontaine's ruins can be found in deep, sprawling underwater landscapes! Players can explore these landscapes using the Diving Mechanic introduced in Version 4.0.
New underwater areas were added in Version 4.2.
You must have Fontaine's Blessing, the Transoceanic Sourcewater, before you can dive in the Fontaine's underwater areas. Make your way to any of the nation's Statue of the Seven, activate it, and enjoy the underwater exploration!
The nearest Statue of the Seven you can activate in Fontaine is at Romaritime Harbor, northeast of Hills of Barsom. Summon your Waverider at Sumeru's shore and ride it across to reach the harbor.

The Sea of Bygone Eras as well as the Nostoi Region were released in Version 4.6 on April 24, 2024. It invovles the humble village of Petrichore and the remains of the Lost Kingdom of Remuria.
Version 4.6 Patch Notes and Details
The Sea of Bygone Eras area can be unlocked by doing the Canticles of Harmony World Quest. In its 3rd part, The Last Day of Remuria, the quest will have you explore the area as one of its objectives.
Canticles of Harmony Quest Guide
Underwater currents work similar to Anemo Rings and push characters forward at high speeds, depending on where your character is facing!
While riding Fontaine's underwater currents, however, you can only move around to some extent, and won't be able to get off the flow until you reach the end.
High-Pressure Water Vents continuously spray out underwater currents, able to sweep your character along its path!
Gain the abilities of a Xenochromatic Armored Crab using the Transoceanic Sourcewater to gain a shield that can resist these underwater currents!
Players can touch small schools of yellow fishes circling around Recovery Orbs to regain HP and Aquatic Stamina.
Aquatic Stamina (blue) is different from regular stamina (yellow) as they are only consumed when swimming fast underwater and you will not drown when it's depleted!
Additionally, this is the only way to recover HP underwater (other than Food from your inventory) as your characters won't be able to use their skills while diving.
There are also some areas in Fontaine that can be found aboveground, but floating suspended in various cubes of water. Players can still enter and explore these areas using the same Diving Mechanic!
What are Allogravity-Condensed Water Bodies?
After acquiring the Autoharmonic Music Box, Monsieur Os will bestow upon you the Might of the Ancient Symphony, which will allow you to play Pause Soundwaves and Play Soundwaves.
Pause Soundwaves will hold surrounding objects in place, while Play Soundwaves will reanimate them. Play the corresponding soundwaves to solve puzzles, acquire chests, and progress the quest!
Might of the Ancient Symphony Guide
The former prince of Remuria has taken a cetacean form and functions as a warp point when exploring the Sea of Bygone Eras. He will disappear and reappear near wherever you venture into.
You can warp instantly to his side and ask him to summon currents to carry you to your desired destination.
How to Summon Currents with Scylla
Lost Grimoires are floating phantom books that can be obtained by stopping them midair with Pause Soundwaves. Once in possession of a Lost Grimoire, keep an eye out for glowing blue bookshelves and submit a Grimoire.
Afterwards, reanimate the bookshelf with Play Soundwaves to move it out of the way and see what they might be hiding!
Lost Grimoires Locations and Puzzle Guide
Another new feature in the Sea of Bygone Eras are Washer Octupuses and Allochromatic Anemones. Washer Octopuses can interact with Allochromatic Anemones to reveal chests.
However, they may need some assistance first before they can help you in solving puzzles.
Allochromatic Anemones Puzzle Guide
Auric Anglerfishes are ancient mechanical anglerfishes that swim about in the Sea of Bygone Eras. Due to their size, they most likely hold a chest inside of their mouths.
To acquire the chest, simply sneak up on the anglerfish's tail and use a Pause Soundwave to stop it in its tracks. Avoid the anglerfish's light as it will shut its mouth and put a barrier on its tail.
The echoing conches in Fontaine release soundwaves underwater, letting you detect invisible objects or activate other devices.
How to Solve Fontaine Echoing Conches
Fantastic Floating Balls are sphere-shaped devices that can be moved using high-pressure currents! You can activate ringed devices by fitting the Fantastic Floating Balls through them.
How to Solve Fantastical Floating Balls
In an underwater cave found south of Mont Esus East, you can find a Thorny Cyst that renders the water around it poisonous. Destroying this Thorny Cyst can result in a Luxurious Chest and a Mysterious Ore!
How to Destroy the Thorny Cyst
Hydro Tulpa is a gigantic humanoid monster formed out of many water droplets. It can summon small Tulpas that it absorbs to become even more powerful.
Hydro Tulpa Location and Boss Guide
Hydro Tulpa is located inside a cave in Beryl Region, northwest of the Elynas mountain ridge. DIve down the waters to enter its cave.
The Millennial Pearl Seahorse is a Fontemer Aberrant that rose to the same status and power as the Emperor of Fire and Iron! This elegant seahorse claimed the northern waters of Fontaine as its territory.
Millennial Pearl Seahorse Boss Guide
The Millennial Pearl Seahorse is located deep in a cave, with the entrance found north of the Liffey Region's underwater area.
The Emperor of Fire and Iron is a new Field Boss found in Fontaine's Belleau Region, ruling over other Fontemer Aberrants. This fiery armored crab attacks by lobbing volcanic bombs and causing lava to erupt from the ground!
Emperor of Fire and Iron Boss Guide
The Emperor of Fire and Iron is located in a lair that can only be reached through an underwater tunnel south of Elton Trench.
The Legatus Golem, or the Statue of Marble and Brass, is a world boss added in Version 4.6. It specializes in heavy, quickly executed attacks that can deal severe damage if you're not careful.
It possesses a Geo Shield and breaking it will render the Legatus Golem vulnerable to attacks.
The Legatus Golem is located in an underground room in the Faded Castle of the Noistoi Region. To unlock the Faded Castle, Travelers must first engage the Canticles of Harmony World Quest.
Fontaine also features its Local Legends as mini-bosses! Most of these tougher versions of Fontaine enemies are fought underwater, which makes the abilities gained with Transoceanic Sourcewater your only weapon to defeat them.
