Each member rules over different concepts as granted upon them by the Heavenly Principles, with Naberius ruling Life, Ronova ruling Death, Istaroth ruling Time, and Asmoday ruling Space.

Naberius, Ruler of Life
Naberius rules over all life and seems to be responsible for the creation of different lives.
This modus seems to align with that of Rhinedottir's, and they have since been fused together, with Rhinedottir claiming agency over the body and physically participating to Shade meetings in Naberius' place.

Ronova, Ruler of Death
Ronova presides over Death and helped create the Night Kingdom in Natlan. She was recently tricked by the Captain to turn the Lord of the Night into an immortal, thus ensuring the survival of the Night Kingdom and the Captain's body.

Istaroth rules over time and seems to be able to manipulate the fabric of time of an individual, area, or phenomenon.

The recent interlude chapter features Rhinedottir and Three of the Four Shades converging for a meeting sometime in the past.
Rulers of Concepts
The Four Shades seem to be gods that preside over different aspects of universal concepts in Genshin Impact, such as Life, Death, Time, and Space.
Servants of the Heavenly Principles
Each person has dominion over different aspects, with one for each concept, and seem to be in service to the Heavenly Principles themselves.
Despite their servitude to the Heavenly Principles, they seem to have agency to act how they please, as is the case with Asmoday.
