Unlock Thus Was the Work Done in Vain by completing Mona's Summertime Odyssey quest, and reading the Old Notes in Minacious Isle. You have to be in Minacious Isle's original form to find the Old Notes.
The Old Notes used to start Thus Was the Work Done in Vain is marked by a World Quest icon on the map. You get to it by climbing the inner ruins of Minacious Isle. You just have to follow the roots until you get to the ledge with the notes.
The Electrohammer Vanguard close to the Old Notes is a separate quest.

| 1 | Read the Old Notes located on the ledge close to a Phantasmal Conch in the Original form of Minacious Isle. |
| 2 |  The notes will talk about a Secret Chamber. Go to the nearest Blue Platform and switch to the Mirage form of Minacious Isle. |
| 3 |  You will be teleported near the top of the tower ruins. Go towards the center of the ruins and look for the room by the stairs. The room will be full of Pyro Torches. |
| 4 |  You have to find a way to open the secret chamber, by lighting up the Pyro Torches in the correct order! |
| 5 |  After opening the room and triggering a cutscene, you just need to leave a message on the wall where a quest marker will be. |
| 6 |  Go back the way you came until you find the Blue Platform again, and change to the Original form of Minacious Isle. |
| 7 |  Get back to the Old Notes to see the changes written inside. |
| 8 |  Your next destination is the ruins on the ocean surface located to the far left of Minacious Isle. You can head there using a Waverider! |
| 9 |  To search for traces of Wolfgang, you have to go down the hole and look for a gap in the wall where a vase would be. Defeat the Hilichurl and break the rock pile past this gap to reveal another pathway. |
| 10 |  While you're here, don't forget to get the Sea Salt-Crusted Key by investigating the broken vase just inside! |
| 11 |  Follow the path until you get to a room with a Blazing Axe Mitachurl, Wooden Shield Mitachurl, Hydro Samachurl, Pyro Hilichurl Shooter, and an Electro Hilichurl Shooter. |
| 12 |  Defeat all enemies in the room and find Wolfgang's notes in the corner next to an overturned Pyro Torch. |
| 13 |  Go back up aboveground and use the Blue Platform right by the hole in the ruins. You will be teleported back to Minacious Isle's Mirage form. |
| 14 |  Head inside the ruins until you find a room with a locked Exquisite Chest, three Pyro Torches, two rock piles, and a locked mechanism at the center. |
| 15 |  There will be no need to solve this Pyro Torch puzzle for the quest. Find the switch located right above one of the rock piles in the room and press it. Go back the way you came and find the second switch on the wall, right by the entrance. Flip this as well to unlock a pathway up. |
| 16 |  Go up the opened gap in the ceiling and defeat the Pyro Hilichurl Shooter, Electro Hilichurl Shooter and two Wooden Shield Hilichurl Guards in the area. |
| 17 |  Open the gate using the Sea Salt-Crusted Key you got from the vase earlier and head inside. |
| 18 |  There will be another Sea-Salt Crusted Key in the vase inside this room that you can grab. Destroy every single vase in the room to unlock the Exquisite Chest, the locked device, and the door to the next room! |
| 19 |  In the next room there will be a shooting star that starts a countdown somewhere once you approach it. This is a Starlight Coalescence puzzle that you don't need to complete for the quest. |
| 20 |  The next room upstairs will trigger another Secret Chamber trap. You must use an Anemo attack to disperse the purple effect on the Pyro Torches in the room first. |
| 21 |  Destroy the rock pile to reveal a hidden Pyro Torch and use Elemental Sight. This will show you the correct order to light up the Pyro Torches! |
| 22 |  After the cutscene, you need to leave a note outside of the room in the direction where you came from. |
| 23 |  Trace your way back to the Blue Platform outside of the ruins and use it to switch island formations. |
| 24 |  You will be teleported back to the submerged ruins. Go back underground and you will find Wolfgang's notes right outside the room it was in before. Be careful of any enemies that may have respawned in the meantime! |
| 25 |  After the cutscene, go back aboveground and summon a Waverider. Sail to the nearby ruins in the shape of a semi-circle where you will find a message carved on a pillar. |
| 26 | Go back to the submerged ruins to use the Blue Platform again. |
| 27 |  Collect 3 Starlight Coalescence and place it in the nearby device to create an astral bridge. Use this to get to the floating ruins up above. |
| 28 |  There will be a Luxurious Chest waiting on top. You will also find the spot where you can leave hints and a Sweet Madame for Wolfgang up here. |
| 29 |  After leaving the Sweet Madame and hints, you can go back to the nearest Blue Platform and switch back to the Original form of Minacious Isle. |
| 30 |  You will be teleported back to the submerged ruins, where you can ride a Waverider to the semi-circular ruins and read Wolfgang's message and complete the quest. |
