To search for traces of Wolfgang, you have to go to the ruins on the ocean surface found west of Minacious Isle. You can only find these ruins in the original form of Minacious Isle.
To search for traces of Wolfgang, you have to go down the hole and look for a gap in the wall where a vase would be. Defeat the Hilichurl and break the rock pile past this gap to reveal another pathway.
While you're here, don't forget to get the Sea Salt-Crusted Key by investigating the broken vase inside! We need this key to open a gate in a later part of the quest.
How to Use the Sea Salt-Crusted Key
Follow the path until you get to a room with a Blazing Axe Mitachurl, Wooden Shield Mitachurl, Hydro Samachurl, Pyro Hilichurl Shooter, and an Electro Hilichurl Shooter.
Defeat all enemies in the room and find Wolfgang's notes in the corner next to an overturned Pyro Torch.
Finding traces of Wolfgang is part of the ''Thus Was the Work Done in Vain'' world quest found in Minacious Isle during the 2.8 Version of the Golden Apple Archipelago.
