Genshin Impact is primarily a single-player game that unlocks multiplayer at Adventure Rank 16. Learn all about the online Co-Op features of the game, and benefits on playing online with friends!
List of Contents
Genshin Impact supports multiplayer at Adventure Rank 16, but it is not necessary for story progression! The game's main content is played as a single-player with certain gameplay that can be played in Co-Op Mode with friends or other random players.
While the game needs internet connection, progressing through the story, solving puzzles, or defeating bosses and domains can be done solo. However, players can opt to go Co-Op mode to play with other players after reaching Adventure Rank 16!
|Co-Op Mode Basic Information|
|1||Unlocks at Adventure Rank 16.|
|2||Can Co-Op with up to Four players at a time.|
|3||Can only join similar or lower world levels.|
|4||Crossplay for all platforms is possible.|
|5||Limited to Host player's Server Region.|
|6||Has a chat function with character stickers.|
|7||Add friends inside or outside of Co-op.|
When players reach the Adventure Rank 16, they'll gain access to online multiplayer. Until then, players will need to play solo in order to learn the ropes of the game before jumping into online.
In Multiplayer mode, only four players can join and play together. One player will play the role of Host, and the other three players can request to join the Host's world.
Players can only join other player's worlds if they're the same World Level or lower, otherwise, players cannot join other people's worlds.
Genshin Impact supports Crossplay for all platforms, including iOS, Android, PC, and PS4! Regardless of the system you'll be playing on, you can join friends in their world or invite them to yours.
Cross-save between iOS, Android, PC, and PS4 is also available! This means that you can play your account on any platforms without having to worry about starting anew!
Cross Saves and Cross-Progression
With the introduction of Version 2.0 came the new account linking function between PlayStation Network Accounts and miHoYo Accounts. With this, you can play on PlayStation and on PC or Mobile and the progress will transfer!
Unfortunately, online play is limited by region, so you'll need to make sure to choose the same server region as your friends to ensure you can play together with them. Keep in mind that you cannot switch servers after starting your journey.
On PS4, you won't be able to choose your server at all, which is instead reliant on the region of your PSN account. Be sure to keep this in mind when deciding what platform to play on.
Chatting with other players is possible with the Chat function. You can talk to other players, friends, or your current co-op Team to discuss strategies, or to simply have fun! In addition, you can use built-in stickers of various characters!
While you can play with your own friends, you can also play with other players from the same server region! If you don't have a lot friends in your Friends List yet, you can check out our Friend Request and Co-Op board!

|Co-Op Mode Features|
|1||Explore Teyvat with friends.|
|2||Complete Daily Commissions together.|
|3||Participate in certain events together.|
|4||Visit and buy from each other's Serenitea Pot.|
|5||No PvP, only Friendly play allowed.|
Online multiplayer or co-op allows players to freely explore the Host's world. Any warp points the Host has unlocked are available for other players to use as well. Players can do Domains, Ley Lines, and various overworld challenges together.
|Limits to Playing in a Host's World|
Only the Host can open treasure chests
Only the Host can continue the story
Only the Host can interact with most NPCs
Only the Host can start Domains and challenges
Although they are free to explore the world, guests in a Host's World are limited in the actions they can perform. As such, visitors can only attack and pick-up drops or items in the Overworld.
Doing Daily Commissions is possible in co-op, which can make daily missions more smoothly and fun. Note that Companionship EXP will only add to your current active characters, so plan ahead if you are gonna do Commissions in co-op!
Some Daily Commissions, which needs interacting with NPCs, are sometimes not possible in co-op.
Some Events in Genshin Impact can be done in co-op mode. Most of these co-opable events can help players defeat Event bosses, challenge fun mini-games, or help people complete event tasks!
Players can also visit other players' Serenitea Pot and hangout or explore their own creations! Furthermore, other players can help speed-up the host's crafting processes, or buy various items from the host's Traveling Teapot Salesman!
Genshin Impact does not feature Player vs. Player (PVP) combat. Don't worry about having to fight other high-level players – the online play is strictly cooperative.
|Benefits of Co-Op|
Help clear tough Domains and Challenges
Explore the world and help with puzzles
Farm items and Local Specialties
Have fun playing together
With other players, you can try and solve tough to crack overworld Puzzles together! Other players can interact with most entities in the overworld, so you can try to solve these puzzles with ease!
Items like Local Specialties can only respawn after a certain amount of time, but with co-op, you can ask for friends and other people to let you farm for them!
You can simply do Co-Op to have fun! Play with friends to do various fun stuff like player-made challenges, race with ice bridging, and so on!
Because Genshin Impact is a free game, players are not required to have a subscription to PlayStation Plus in order to play the game online.
And since crossplay is available, you'll be able to enjoy playing online with players from other platforms as well!
Our team had the opportunity to try Genshin Impact's online multiplayer during the closed beta test, and thoroughly enjoyed the implementation. There were no points where it felt that multiplayer was highly necessary during the beta test, and enemies gain HP as more players join in, so multiplayer will not directly multiply your battle power or make the game a cakewalk.
If you're playing online with four players who all have well-built characters, your adventure will proceed more smoothly, but it's not enough to completely alter the experience, so from our impression, the game can be enjoyed easily either in single-player mode or online.
