Zandik is the real name that Dottore was referred to during his time as a researcher in Akademiya.
During his time in Sumeru, he was a Trainee Dastur, who are students in the progress of their theses to become a Dastur.

Involved in Eleazar Research
According to one of the Ragged Records found in Ardavi Valley, he was part of the medical research regarding Eleazar in Apam Woods. During this time, Zandik noticed that child subjects were mysteriously disappearing, which he suspects that the Aranaras were involved. Because of this incident, he started gaining interest in the research of Aranara.

Heretic of the Akademiya
In the story provided in the Pale Flame set, Zandik was expelled from the Akadamiya because of his research interest and actions. Zandik was interested in researching and reverse-engineering the 'killing machines', which is heavily implied to be Ruin Guards, but was reprimanded as this is against the Akademiya's Three Virtues and Six Sins. He was also involved in the murder of Sohreh, a fellow Dastur.

In the same story in Pale Flame set, after he was expelled in the Akademiya, Zandik was approached by Pierro, the Director of the Fatui Harbingers, and invited him to be in the Fatui in exchange for providing him resources for his research.
During this time, he was given the name II Dottore, or the Doctor, which he found amusing due to the irony of it.
Encountered the Ibis King
During the Ruins Exploration Event Story Quest, It was revealed that in one of his expedition in the desert, Zandik and a fellow researcher stumbled upon the Ibis King's domain. The Ibis King described him as 'mistrustful and narcissistic'.
The Ibis King was considering to offer his third gift, but was relieved that Zandik declined as giving too much power could be dangerous to someone like him.
Partnered with Layla's Ancestor
In this expedition, Zandik was accompanied by a fellow Dastur, who was revealed to be a Descendant of Tulaytullah — Layla and Tighnari's ancestral land.
The Ibis King saved this researcher from Zandik's selfishness by deceiving him that only descendants of Tulaytullah can enter and exit in his domain, forcing Zandik to protect him.
It is heavily implied that this researcher is Layla's ancestor.
