Lan Yan Ascension and Talent Materials
| Strengths | |||
|---|---|---|---|
|
• On-demand Shield that has the potency to rival that of more premium Shielder options. • Shield is capable of absorbing and adapting to any of the Swirlable elements on-field, which makes the shield particularly useful against Elemental opponents. • ATK scaling makes Lan Yan simple to build but does not jeopardize her effectiveness even if she were to run a full Elemental Mastery. • Constellations give Lan Yan's Shield almost 100% uptime in Quickswap teams. |
|||
| Weaknesses | |||
|
• Shield cooldown is longer than the Shield duration, resulting in 4 seconds of downtime where her Shield is not deployed. This is also further reduced by her Shield starting at the Elemental Skill cast and not the landing, virtually reducing her Skill's duration further. • Sub-par Anemo application especially Off-Field, making her a one-time Swirl unit in most teams that need to benefit from Anemo's swirl capabilities. |
As a Shielder support with ATK scalings, Lan Yan benefits from as much ATK as possible in order to maximize her Shield Strength, but can also benefit from stats such as Energy Recharge and Elemental Mastery.
For a general rule of thumb, hit as much ATK as you can while accounting for ER for ease of use and EM if using her for her Swirl capabilities.

If using Lan Yan purely as a Shielder Support, look into getting her ATK as close as possible to 3,000 to maximize her Shield while running 4-pc. Viridescent Venerer if possible.
Additionally, look for Energy Recharge and Elemental Mastery substats for convenience and to equip Lan Yan with some damage without sacrificing Shield Strength.

Lan Yan is also a viable Swirl unit when using 4-pc. Viridescent Venerer paired with EM stats.
This playstyle has the benefit of Lan Yan being able to provide her own damage but comes at the cost of her Shield health, making this a tradeoff that is more worth it in certain team comps where Lan Yan is the On-Field Driver.
| Stat | Goal Value |
|---|---|
| ATK | 2,000 |
| Energy Recharge | 200% or above |
Lan Yan's stat requirements are generally straightforward, requiring around 2,000 ATK to give her a sizable health pool for her shield, and around 200% ER for her Elemental Burst.
Having enough Energy Recharge will allow her to get an Elemental Burst off before using her Elemental Skill nearly every rotation, which contributes to general enemy grouping and chip damage.

|---|---|---|
| Elemental Skill | Elemental Burst | Normal Attack |
Lan Yan's utility comes from her Shield and its strength, which makes her Elemental Skill the main priority when leveling her Talents. This is followed by her Elemental Burst for extra damage and crowd control.
Her Normal Attacks can be saved for last, but can also be leveled at the same time as her Elemental Burst if using her as an On-Field Anemo Driver.
Lan Yan's best artifact choice is the Anemo-universal 4-pc. Viridescent Venerer for the RES shred it provides as well as the near 100% uptime on Anemo Support units.
Other choices include a mix-and-match of 2-pc. ATK sets and 4-pc. Noblesse Oblige if no one else on the team has it.

Lan Yan's choice of weaponry is fairly versatile as she can benefit from virtually any stat, but will see Memory of Dust as her best weapon for its ATK and Shield Strength bonuses.
Other weapons can work for Lan Yan as well, such as Skyward Atlas, Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayers, or even EM weapons such as Starcaller's Watch and Sacrificial Fragments if using her for her EM Swirl potential.

Lan Yan works best as an Elemental Shieldbot with her shield's swirl potential, or as a Swirl Support that deals damage with elemental-infused attacks.
Whichever the use case, Lan Yan will serve most teams well so long as they require either an Anemo unit or a Shielder, as she has one of the more potent shields in the game.
While Lan Yan can work with more teammates than the ones listed below, these notable teammates are generally the DPS units she will be run with, and will take up the most On-Field time with her shield in play.
| Character | Explanation |
|---|---|
|
|
DPS Arlecchino's Normal Attack playstyle requires her to have a shieldbot in play, even more so due to the fact that she cannot heal. Lan Yan adequately fits well for that, as well as providing Viridescent Venerer RES shred. |
|
|
DPS A C0 Neuvillette greatly benefits from Lan Yan's shield as one of the few channeling DPS units in the game. This shield ensures that Neuvillette can comfortably get at least the first two of his triple-CA combo off without interruption. |
|
|
DPS Hu Tao benefits off of Lan Yan's shield in the same way that Arlecchino does, and can make use of Lan Yan's shred in the same way to similar effect. |
|
|
DPS Lyney greatly benefits off of Lan Yan's shield as a stationary DPS, meaning that interruption resistance is more important on him than most people as being interrupted greatly reduces Lyney's DPS. |
|
|
Support While not as impactful to Bennett himself, Lan Yan's shielding benefits from Bennett's ATK boost in the same way that Xiangling's Elemental Burst does. Casting her shield within Bennett's circle improves shield health. |
|
|
DPS While Mavuika can benefit off of the added safety net and RES shred of Lan Yan's shield, she will often have better options for teammates due to the nature of her dual playstyle. Regardless, she still enjoys Lan Yan's presence when it is available. |
|
|
DPS Lan Yan will either absorb purely Electro in Clorinde's Aggravate teams, or Electro and Hydro in Electro-Charged teams, but the shield will be welcome for Clorinde regardless of element. |
|
|
DPS A C0 Wriothesley's On-Field time matches that of Lan Yan's shield uptime, making her a great sustain option for Wriothesley teams that need a shielder. |
|
|
DPS Ayato maintains his position during his Elemental Skill, making him highly susceptible to interruption and enemy counterattacks. Lan Yan offers a large safety net to this by giving Ayato more than enough time to get his On-Field rotation off. |
|
|
DPS In an optimal team, Lan Yan will always generate an Electro shield for Keqing as they will usually be paired with another Electro unit and a Dendro unit. |
|
|
DPS Depending on Ayaka's Freeze consistency, she either greatly benefits from Lan Yan's shield to save her from interruption, or it functions as a nice safety net to catch any mistakes. Regardless, it will come at the cost of DPS, but provides safety. |

In Vaporize teams, Lan Yan also functions mostly as a Shielder unit that keeps the team topped up with defenses so that DPS units with long on-field times can work without fear of their combos being interrupted.

Lan Yan carries a similar function to Vaporize teams in Melt teams, serving as both as Shieldbot and a RES shredder for both Pyro and Cryo instances, buffing and keeping her DPS units safe in the process.

Due to the overwhelming presence of Cryo in Freeze teams, Lan Yan's main use case here is to Swirl Cryo in order to shred enemy RES and enable more damage for the DPS units.
This is already on top of providing defensive capabilities to the team, contributing to their survivability.

Regardless of the element that Lan Yan swirls, she will be able to aid Electro-Charged teams in keeping up the elemental reaction due to the co-existence of both Hydro and Electro in most of these comps.

Lan Yan can function as the On-Field Anemo Driver in most Reaction-based teams, providing both an offensive means to facilitate elemental reactions and a means of defense against most threats.

"As One Might Stride Betwixt the Clouds" After triggering the Elemental Absorption from the Passive Talent "Four Sealing Divination Charms," this instance of Lan Yan's Elemental Skill Swallow-Wisp Pinion Dance will produce another Feathermoon Ring when they are thrown at opponents. "Dance Vestments Billow Like Rainbow Jade" While the Swallow-Wisp Shield is active, when your active party member's Normal Attacks deal DMG, 40% of the Shield's DMG absorption will be restored, up to its original maximum absorption. This effect can occur once every 2s. |
| C3 |
"On White Wings Pierce Through Cloud and Fog" Increases the Level of Swallow-Wisp Pinion Dance by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15. |

"With Drakefalcon's Blood-Pearls Adorned" After Lan Yan uses her Elemental Burst Lustrous Moonrise, the Elemental Mastery of all nearby party members increases by 60 for 12s. |

"Having Met You, My Heart is Gladdened" Increases the Level of Lustrous Moonrise by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15. |

| C2 | ★★☆ | • Allows Elemental Skill Shield to be refreshed by 40% of its Shield Health when any active character's Normal Attacks deal damage. |
| C4 | ★★☆ | • Increases Elemental Mastery of all units by 60 for 12s when using Elemental Burst. |
| C6 | ★★★ | • Gives Elemental Skill another charge. |
C6 adds a much needed convenience into Lan Yan's kit, allowing her Elemental Skill to be refreshed, virtually giving her nearly 100% uptime on her Shield.
| Black Pheasant Strides on Water |
|---|
| Wields her Feathermoon Rings to up to 4 attacks, dealing Anemo DMG.
Charge Attack Consumes a certain amount of Stamina to throw out a Feathermoon Ring, dealing Anemo DMG. Plunge Attack: Gathers the power of Anemo and plunges towards the ground from mid-air, damaging all opponents in her path. Deals AoE Anemo DMG upon impact with the ground. |
Lan Yan's Normal Attacks uses her Anemo-infused Glaives to deal DMG to opponents.
This seems to be a way for Lan Yan to support the team with Swirls and deal DMG on her own.
| Swallow-Wisp Pinion Dance |
|---|
| Summons a Swallow-Wisp Shield, dashes forward and, upon making contact with her target, will leap back into the air. While in mid-air, pressing her Elemental Skill again or pressing Normal Attack will cause Lan Yan to hurl her Feathermoon Rings at an opponent, and they will spin between nearby opponents upon hit, dealing Anemo DMG.
Hold Attack: Enter Aiming Mode to adjust the dash direction. The Swallow-Wisp Shield's DMG absorption scales based on her ATK, and has a 250% absorption efficiency against Anemo DMG. |
Lan Yan's main bread and butter is her ability to dash into combat, generating an Anemo shield and throwing her Anemo-infused Glaives into enemies to trigger Elemental Reactions.
From this, it seems that Lan Yan's main role in a team is that of a Swirl Support that aids the team with both Shields for sustain and Swirls for Elemental DMG.
Lan Yan's Elemental Skill has her dash into an opponent, and jumping back upon making contact, generating a shield in the process.
Once in the air, she can throw her Glaives at enemies, dealing Anemo DMG with her weapon bouncing between nearby enemy targets.
When Lan Yan dashes into an opponent affected by an element, her Shield and Glaive are infused by this element, generating that Element's shield and dealing the same element's DMG.
This allows Lan Yan to be versatile in how her shield and kit works, as her Shield can be infused to better suit the teams needs and her Glaive can trigger related Elemental Reactions.
Holding her Elemental Skill allows Lan Yan to dash a short distance in whichever direction she is facing, allowing her to scale mountains or cross gaps with ease.
| Lustrous Moonrise |
|---|
| Lan Yan creates a Swallow Array, pulling in nearby opponents and objects and dealing multiple instances of AoE Anemo DMG. |
Lan Yan's Elemental Burst channels an Anemo vortex that seems to deal damage to enemies in an area, while knocking them airborne and pulling them closer to the center of the Burst.
| Four Sealing Divination Charms |
|---|
| When the dash from the Elemental Skill Swallow-Wisp Pinion Dance hits a target, if it interacts with Hydro/Pyro/Cryo/Electro, the Swallow-Wisp Shield wilt undergo Elemental Absorption, with the converted shield absorbing DMG from the corresponding element with 250% efficiency.
Additionally, if this use of Swallow-Wisp Pinion Dance causes the Swallow-Wisp Shield to undergo Elemental Absorption, the Feathermoon Rings that Lan Yan throws at her foes additionally deal Elemental DMG equal to 50% of the original in the corresponding Elemental This DMG is considered Elemental Skill DMG. |
| Skyfeather Evil-Subduing Charm |
|---|
| The Elemental Skill Swallow-Wisp Pinion Dance and the Elemental Burst Lustrous Moonrise deal increased DMG to 309% and 774% of Lan Yan's Elemental Mastery respectively. |
| Thought and Intent, Like Silken Scent |
|---|
| When Lan Yan is in the party, your characters will not startle Crystalflies and certain other animals when getting near them. Check the “Other” subcategory Of the “Living Beings / Wildlife” section in the Archive for creatures this skill works on. |
Lan Yan's Exploration Passive lets her approach wildlife without startling them, allowing for a more efficient and stress-free way to collect resources such as Crystal Cores.

As part of the Chenyu Vale Artisan Association, Lan Yan seems to reside in Chenyu Vale along with her mother, and spends her time either weaving Rattan objects, or out exploring the mountains of Chenyu Vale.

Gaming
|
Being friends with Lan Yan is a food-lover's dream! You've gotta ask her to take you into the mountains to try the local dishes. There's even a place where you can bring your own ingredients. Just tell her Gaming told you about it, and she'll know the one. The mountain roads are hard to navigate, so you'll definitely need her to lead the way.. Don't want you getting lost out there! Anyway, eat as much as you want, okay? The boss is my friend, so just put it on my tab and call it a day! |
Hu Tao
|
Lan Yan, you say? She's a lot stronger than she looks. She claims to only know a few of the Qimen arts, but she can get rid of dangerous things like fetor and illnesses! Aiya, there's only one problem... Removing all the bad stuff and making everyone all fit and strong isn't exactly good for the funeral business! |
Keqing
|
Madame Lan is a lovely young lady and a very talented craftswoman. As the Ministry of Civil Affairs works to promote local craftmanship in the future, we will certainly consult masters like her. Oh, what about outside of work? Of course, she's welcome in Liyue Harbor any time. I find her company very enjoyable. |
Xiangling
|
Guoba loves Lan Yan! They spent soooooo long shaking hands when they first met, it was like they'd known each other forever, haha. Lan Yan actually promised to take me foraging for wild mushrooms and insects... Hehe, once my new dish is ready, you've gotta come try it! |

Chongyun
|
About Chongyun One time, I was out with grandpa on one of his house calls, when I saw Chongyun leave the house with a dejected look on his face. Given how helpless he looked, I assumed the situation must have been bad, but I didn't sense an ominous presence within the house. Grandpa's reading didn't predict any misfortune, either. Maybe he spent a lot of energy getting rid of the problem and was too tired to talk... Huh? You think it's possible he didn't do anything at all? That makes me even more confused... |
Gaming
|
About Gaming I've known Gaming since we were kids! He was quite the neighborhood terror back then, haha. Hm? That doesn't sound like him? Well, he's matured a lot since then, just like I have. One thing hasn't changed, though — he still carries snacks with him wherever he goes. He always comes back from his travels with a ton of goodies to share with his friends. And, of course, he never leaves without stocking up on his hometown favorites... |
Hu Tao
|
About Hu Tao Director Hu always seems so upbeat and cheerful. Even when the situation was desperate, she was always there with a joke to cheer me up. I haven't known her long, so I was wondering... Is she always like that? Hmm... In any case, starting from today, I hope all her smiles are out of genuine happiness, rather than an effort to reassure other people. |
Keqing
|
About Keqing When will the Yuheng finally take a break? She was running all over the place during the Lantern Rite. I wanted to treat her to a meal to thank her for her kindness, but I never had the chance... I was also hoping she could do my hair into a pair of cat ears just like hers. But... maybe that's asking too much. Although, something tells me she wouldn't mind... |
Qiqi
|
About Qiqi Qiqi likes finches, right? I'm thinking of making her one out of rattan! Do you know her favorite color? |
Xiangling
|
About Xiangling Everyone says first impressions are important, and the first time I ate at Wanmin Restaurant, I had so much regret... regret that it took me so long to visit Liyue Harbor! I could have met Xiangling way sooner... In any case, as soon as she heard me talk about all the rare ingredients in the mountains of my hometown, she started planning a trip to Chenyu Vale! I'll make sure she doesn't go home empty-handed! |
Xingqiu
|
About Xingqiu I've run into master Xingqiu several times in the mountains. He wasn't accompanied by anyone from the Feiyun Commerce Guild, so it never seemed like official business. After those chance encounters, he often brought me copies of the newest supernatural novels, and I promised to never tell anyone. Except... I definitely just told you, didn't I? Please keep that secret for the both of us, Traveler! |

I actually have a pretty good f2p sub-dps build for her, making almost as much damage as skirk (i think). I believe R5 Widsith would be better than sacrificial offering for her since it either bossts her atk by 120% (for shield), al her elemental damage by 96% or her EM by 480 (for strong swirl reactions that SHRED). Until i get a second R5 widsith i will keep her the way she is.
