Focalors (Furina) is the Hydro Archon

Genshin - Focalors is the Hydro Archon
Focalors is Fontaine's God of Justice and the Archon that reigns over the element of Hydro. She succeeded Egeria 500 years ago and inherited the burden of Fontaine's prophecy.

It was revealed that she separated her divinity from her body and spirit. Thus, she created Furina, who is a human version of her, playing the role of Fontaine's archon without powers.

Note that throughout the article, the name ''Focalors'' will be attributed to the god and ''Furina'', the human counterpart, as they are separate entities despite being technically the same person.

The information below contains spoilers from the Chapter 4 Archon Quests and Furina's Story Quest!

The God of Hydro and Justice

Genshin - The God of Hydro and Justice

Focalors is the God of Justice who reigned over Fontaine for 500 years after the death of Egeria. She is one of the youngest archons who took over the seat after the Cataclysm. Fontaine is a nation that prides itself on its technology and culture.

It is the home of various technological advancements and the headquarters of The Steambird, the largest news publication in Teyvat.

In this nation, opera and trials are both conducted in the Opera Epiclese. Trials that concern people's lives are also seen as entertainment.

Fontaine's Relationship with Furina

In other nations, Archons are worshipped and deeply respected. While this is also true in Fontaine, Furina seems to be seen more as an eccentric idol.

Focalors Created the Oratrice

Genshin - Focalors Created the Oratrice
The Oratrice Mecanique d'Analyse Cardinale was created by Focalors to collect indemnitium, which is used to power Fontaine and the Clockwork Mekas. The way it collects indemnitium is by delivering judgment in the trials after the Chief Justice.

Regardless of the Chief Justice's verdict, the results from the Oratrice must be honored.

Fontaine's Prophecy and Focalors

Genshin - Fontaine
In Chapter 4: Act 1 - Prelude of Blancheur and Noirceur Archon Quest, we encounter a prophecy about Fontaine that the people are born with ''sin'' and no matter how many trials take place, it will not absolve the sins.

The people will be dissolved in the water, leaving Furina weeping on her throne, which will wash the sins of Fontaine away.

Chapter 4: Act 1 Archon Quest Guide

Inherited the Original Sin from Egeria

Genshin - Inherited the Original Sin from Egeria
Egeria was the creator of the Oceanids, and as such, it was the first sentient life-form she created. Eventually, the majority of the Oceanids longed to become humans. Egeria granted that wish by putting Primordial Seawater in their veins, thus turning them into human-like beings.

Celestia, or more precisely, the Heavenly Principles, considered it a sin for the archons to create humans without their permission. Thus, the prophecy was bestowed upon them.

The Truth of the Prophecy Slates

Genshin - The Truth of the Prophecy Slates
In Chapter 4 Act 5 - Masquerade of the Guilty, slates were discovered in a ruin near the Poisson. The slates depicted the prophecy from Celestia.

The first slate depicts Egeria turning the Oceanids into humans through the use of the Primordial Seawater, which can be reversed by coming into contact with the water once again.

The second slate is of Egeria begging the heavens for forgiveness but she was never forgiven. The third one depicts the people of Fontaine trying the Hydro Archon at the Court of Justice.

The fourth one is of Furina weeping on her throne as everyone gets turned back into an oceanid by the Primordial Sea. The source of the Primordial Sea that will start the catastrophe is the All-Devouring Narwhal.

Focalors and Furina Explained

Genshin - Focalors is the Hydro Archon
Focalors was the chosen successor of Egeria. She was once an oceanid that was turned into a human. She was later chosen by Egeria to be her successor. Upon assuming her godhood, she separated her body and spirit and created Furina.

Furina is Focalors' Ideal Human

When the separation occurred, Focalors, the divine, retained her memories, while Furina did not. Furina is what Focalors would be if she were human. Focalors has always wanted to be human, and she sees Furina as her ideal human, flaws and all.

Set Out to Deceive the Heavenly Principles

Genshin - Set Out to Deceive the Heavenly Principles
After pondering about it at the bottom of the sea, Focalors decided that she must deceive the Heavenly Principles. Which means, she must allow the prophecy to happen to a certain extent and save everyone at the same time.

Invited Furina to Play the Role of an Archon

Genshin - Invited Furina to Play the Role of an Archon
First, Focalors invited Furina to play the role of the Hydro Archon and placed a curse on her. So long as Focalors was alive, she would never die, and she could never attain personal happiness until the prophecy was done.

This is so she can fool the Heavenly Principles into believing that there is an active Archon in Fontaine. Furina did this act for 500 years without telling anyone for fear of the heavens knowing about the plan.

Focalors and the Ultimate Sacrifice

Genshin - Focalors and the Ultimate Sacrifice
The real purpose of the Oratrice is to collect enough indemnitium to execute the Hydro Archon. Once Furina has been tried in court, it will activate to execute Focalors.

Thus, destroying the Divine Seat of Hydro that Celestia created, she returned the power to Neuvillette as the Hydro Dragon Sovereign.

Returning the Power to Neuvillette

Genshin - Returning the Power to Neuvillette
Once Neuvillette regained his power, he used it to change the Primordial Seawater in the veins of Fontainians into real blood, which turned them into real humans.

There was indeed a flood as Furina wept on her throne, but the water eventually receded, and since the people were now real humans, they all survived.

Did Furina Die

Genshin - Did Furina Die
No, Furina did not die. It was Focalors, her divine self, who died. Once the reign over the Hydro Element was given back to Neuvillette, she was set free of her role to play as the Hydro Archon. She could now become the human both she and Focalors wanted.

Furina's Freedom and Vision

Genshin - Furina
After the events in the Archon Quest, Furina left her residence in the Opera Epiclese and proceeded to live a human life. She also surrendered all her responsibilities as the leader of the nation to Neuvillette.

During the first act of her story quest, she ends up helping a theatre troupe enact their final musical play. She did not want to act again and initially served as a consultant.

However, due to the leading actress being terminally ill, she had to act last minute. By the end of her performance, she gained a Hydro Vision!

The Matter of the Hydro Gnosis

Genshin - The Matter of the Hydro Gnosis
When Focalors died, she gave the Hydro Gnosis to Neuvillette. When Neuvillette later meets Skirk, she mentions that the Gnosis is the remains of the Third Descender.

She said it will only bring misfortune to anyone who carries it. So, Neuvillette gave it Arlecchino. The Hydro Gnosis was never in Furina's possession.
