What are the Ancient Moon's Remnants?
Fragments Hidden Behind A Fake Sky
During the Chapter 5 Act 4 Archon Quest, a part of the sky was destroyed, revealing a black and red space with fragments of stone-like objects floating within it. Mavuika mentions investigating the phenomenon to the Traveler later on in the quest.
Hints of the sky in Teyvat being fake had been mentioned by Scaramouche as early as the Unreconciled Stars event in Version 1.1, and later on in the Archon Quest Chapter 3 Act 5 between Nahida and Il Dottore.

Relics of a Secret Source Technology Glimpsed in the Sky
At the end of the Chapter 5 Act 5 Archon quest, Mavuika mentions the result of her investigations; that the things they saw were called the Ancient Moon's Remnants. These fragments were relics of Secret Source technology from the era of the Ancient Dragons.

Possibly Part of the Three Moon Sisters
The Ancient Moon's Remnants may also be referring to the remains of the two moons that had been destroyed in ancient times, as the name suggests. This would indicate the ancient moons being used in the Secret Source technology from a long lost civilization.
The legend of Teyvat previously having three moons have been mentioned in several in-game items, such as in the description of the Moonpiercer weapon, the books Heart's Desire: Sapphire Volume 3 and Moonlit Bamboo Forest Volume 3, and several artifacts.

According to Teyvat's legends, long ago there were three sisters took turns riding a chariot across the sky and acted as the moons. But a great calamity struck and killed two of the three sisters, leaving only one moon in the sky.

Visible in the Sky in Natlan
After completing the Chapter 5 Act 4 quest, you can still see faint impressions of the Ancient Moon's Remnants in the sky. It's easiest to see when teleporting to the Masters of the Night-Wind Statue of the Seven at night, in the northwest direction of the map.
