Alternate Outfits are just partial redesigns for the default outfits of characters in Genshin Impact. From the looks of it, there are only minimal differences between the original outfits and the alternate ones.
These Alternate Outfits are not to be confused with the special, themed Character Outfits you can get from events for free or buy from the Character Outfits shop with Genesis Crystals.

Alternate Oufits in Genshin Impact were released on January 27, 2022. They've been available as alternate skin designs for Amber, Jean, Mona, and Rosaria from Version 2.4 onwards!
The Alternate Outfits have already been sent to all Travelers' mail boxes. Just check your in-game mail for an ''Alternate Outfits Distribution Email'' and claim the contents to get all new Alternate Outfits!
After the Version 2.5 Update, the new Alternate Outfits will automatically be available for all Travelers with the corresponding characters.

Yes, you will be able to keep the original Character Outfit designs! Genshin Impact's official post confirmed that characters' default outfits will be retained.
Genshin Impact has not given an official reason for the release of alternate outfits. We'll update this section with the full details once Genshin Impact releases more information.
